About this deal

Candice Brathwaite’s much-anticipated second book about all the things she wishes she’d been told when she was young and needed guidance. She somehow manages to circle it round to make you realise that it was due to her own lack of self-love.

Candice started utilizing the internet in 2015 to tell her own motherhood story, keen to show that young black families weren't just surviving but thriving, and her straight-talking, original content really struck a chord with fans and brands alike. We also use them to help detect unauthorized access or activity that violate our terms of service, as well as to analyze site traffic and performance for our own site improvement efforts.Even though Winter’s story was based miles away, as young black girls raised in south London, many of us felt like we had elements of Winter within us. Unfortunately, this was less of a shock for me as we spent quite a lot of the book building up to the shock reveal, so it was already revealed without the words being placed on the page. Candice is a successful author in both the non fiction and fiction spaces with her first book, ‘I am not your Baby Mother’ (2020) reaching the Sunday Times Bestseller list. A sharp and authentic love story about 16-year-old Cynthia, who finds herself caught between two brothers: one who is Black and the other who is white. It provides so much information and breathtakingly honest insight into the unique challenges of black motherhood, and the barriers and issues that are still hugely prevalent (especially in healthcare and in schools!

well maybe we were supposed to know and I just didn’t know what it was from the subtle description of it. Our strict Jamaican headmistress got wind of the book’s contents and banned it, making it even more imperative to read! I read it through without stopping and found the chapter on White Feminism particularly challenging.

Tackling the complexities of growing up Black and British, Cuts Both Ways is the first fiction title from the Sunday Times best-selling Candice Brathwaite, author of I Am Not Your Baby Mother. I reviewed it back in 2020 having read it with my best friend; we found it a good primer on Black lives and history in Britain and learned some interesting bits of history – my review here https://librofulltime.
