About this deal

Once they figure out who he hooked up with, Auden ends up briefly explaining to Maggie that she has no relationship with Jake whatsoever. But this one, for me, was a little escape once in a while, and I was more grateful for it than I expected. It is this misconception that Auden has to contend with throughout the summer as she learns to broaden her perception of other girls.

It is clear that Auden's father is irritated since he does not want to leave the house so he can finish his book. She tells Eli she has to get serious to be ready for college and that she can’t waste more time messing around. Later, talking in Eli's truck, he pushes the idea of learning to ride a bike again, and she tries to bring up his BMXing, but neither want to talk about it. Auden meets Eli, a fellow insomniac and professional biker, who helps her find her inner child, let go of high expectations, and learn the meaning of love. As Auden gets to know her stepmother Heidi and her new friend Maggie, she unlearns a lot of this, something that was amazing to see both spelled out and conveyed in subtle moments.Auden is spending the summer realizing how busy her father really is, she's not sure he really even wants her there, and half the nights she spends out driving around, unable to sleep. The employees at Heidi's boutique encourage Auden to go to a party with them and there she has an encounter with Eli. Maggie teaches Auden how to ride a bike, and the two are both very bright students and end up becoming roommates at Defriese University. Auden attracts negative attention from several local girls after she unwittingly hooks up with one of their exes.

There was a whole other world at night, one I’d been completely unaware of, and it made me start thinking about the people who chose to live in it, and how they found themselves there. Auden accepts her stepmother Heidi’s invitation to spend the summer with her, her father Robert, and her newborn half sister Thisbe. Sarah Dessen is a Young Adult (YA) romance staple for many, including myself when I was a teenager, so I was delighted when I heard that my favorite book by her was being made into a movie! Hollis West: Auden's free-spirited, happy-go-lucky older brother who has been backpacking abroad in Europe for a couple years prior to the beginning of the story. Unfortunately for Auden, helping out at Clementine’s means that she has to come into contact with some of the townies that she has been avoiding. She tells him he was right, that she gave up on things she wasn’t good at immediately, including their relationship. Auden's dad wakes the baby up and gives her to Heidi while telling Auden to go down to the restaurant, Last Chance, to pick up dinner for everyone while he finished writing for the day. They kiss with the waves crashing around them and their friends cheering in the background — very sweet and appropriately cinematic. Auden is introvert, she spends all her time studying to impress her accademic parents but doesn't realise that her social life is important too.
