About this deal

Everything written here is not for advice but is my explanation of what we did while weaning our little one. Once introduced and if tolerated, keep offering those foods as part of your baby's usual diet (to minimise the risk of allergy). In fact, the repercussions of waiting 3-5 days between introducing new foods can be much worse than the very minimal risk of developing a food allergy to – let’s say – steak or green pepper. This type of allergy is common among children between the ages of 0-3 years old and causes a “severe gastrointestinal reaction” (vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration) that “ generally occurs two to six hours after consuming milk, soy, certain grains and some other solid foods” (6).

This is the general rule of thumb that I realised while preparing food for my daughter when she was 1 year old. Written by our board-certified pediatricians, allergist, and dietitians, the plan factors in baby's nutritional needs and provides daily and weekly suggestions for introduce new foods. These include honey, undercooked eggs, cow’s milk as a main drink, sweetened drinks, seafood with high mercury contents and raw fish. I’m not going to promise that feeding a large variety of healthy first foods will save you from having a picky eater. In addition, following the protocol of a 3 day waiting period can actually have a negative impact by limiting food diversity for your baby early on.We know with much more certainty that the risk of developing a food allergy or reaction to a particular food that is not on the highly allergenic food list is extremely low.

Most foods that I’ve served him, especially the earliest ones, were cut into a “french fry” shape about the size on a finger. There is no pressure, it’s just a bit of fun and actually babies need to have repeated exposure to a variety of foods so making sure these foods are regularly put into your baby’s diet is recommended. If the six-month milestone is in sight and your little human can sit up unsupported, it’s time to prepare for introducing solids in all their colourful, gloopy glory. It is best practice to use baby led weaning utensils like baby suction plate, plastic bibs, baby led weaning spoon or other blw utensils to make it easier for both you and baby.

With a 7 month old baby, you can add in a few more foods including those with more acid like citrus. We need to introduce as many different foods ( flavors and textures ) as possible during the critical period between 6-9 months of age while baby is developing taste and texture preferences (4) . To begin with they will still be getting most of their energy and nutrients from breast milk or first infant formula.

Add to that the tiredness of being a new parent, and you might just be craving the structure of a list. I decided to come up with a list by myself and the rough idea is that you will introduce a variety of flavours and textures in their first 6 months of weaning. The flip to that is that it really can feel hard to come up with new things to eat every day, and many of us like that bit of structure that lists can provide. In addition to my personal experience, we consulted three experts to gain deeper insights into the benefits of exposing your child to a variety of foods. I had joined some online baby led weaning groups where many parents were excited when their baby tried their 100 first foods!
