At this point in your life, you’ve likely held at least one job… maybe more. And you’ve probably gotten money for birthdays, holidays and other big moments. And why would you want to pay someone for minor fixes? It’s a waste of money, which is a big no-no in adulting 101. Knowing how to administer first aid can be life-saving in those circumstances. First aid treatment can prevent your condition from worsening or keep a loved one alive untilthey receive medical assistance. Owning your own car can certainly give you a sense of personal freedom—it may even be a necessity depending on where you live. Losing a car you depend on because it needs to go to the shop can be a real hassle, so it’s a good idea to learn the basics of car maintenance to keep things running smoothly—literally.

You should also know how to sew on a button or mend a small hole using a needle and thread. So, you need a small sewing kit at home… if you don’t already have one. I would hear people say things like, “You’ve got to have a relationship with Jesus.” I’m like, “They are just saying that”; you know? “That’s just something people say”; but then, when it happened in my life, it changed. Though the pain of work is a consequence of the fall, work itself is not a punishment. In a perfect world, we would still work. How do I know this? Because before the fall, in the Garden of Eden when it was a perfect world, humankind was still commanded to work. In other words, we’re created to work. Paradise is working the way God intended and joyfully serving him through that work. When we joyfully serve him through our work today we are showing the world a preview of paradise by being a reflection of God and his coming kingdom. “Whatever you do”—which covers everything you do and every possible job—work hard at it. Serve God through it. And you might find that you start to actually like it. Bob: Have they understood there is a difference between what you’re doing and what you were created to do? Adulting is stepping into: “This is what life is all about in the first place,” and realigning yourself in that direction.Dave: It sounds like there must be a real need of young adults—and maybe, it’s not just young adults—needing to know how to grow up. Is that what you found out?—it’s like: “That’s what adulting is.” What in the world would draw that many people to what you’re having to say?

I was probably, at best, agnostic. I believed there is a God; but I don’t know who He is—and really thought, “What are the odds I’d be born to the right country?”—like: “If I was born in India, I’d be Hindu. If I was born in China, I’d be Buddhist. If I was born in Iran, I’d be Muslim. If I was born in Israel, I might be Jewish. Our character has to be a much larger foundation than our competency.
