The inputs are certainly not extensive enough to suit a variety of applications, but they cover the essential needs. In any case, adapters can be of help if one wants more options. According to Pioneer, the DJ DM 40 units are made to be very user-friendly when it comes to connectivity.

Especially if you want to practice your DJing skills, having a pair of speakers that make you want to move is an essential point to cover. What does stand out is that Pioneer succeeded in delivering on its promise of low distortion. Even as the speakers get quite loud, there is no noticeable harshness. When placed next to similar sized speaker, the warmth of the bass really shines through. Leaning towards the lower frequencies, it’s clear these speakers have been designed with DJ’s in mind. The bass is deep and punchy, creating a warm tone that will easily fill a bedroom or office. Given the speakers bass heavy EQ, the DM-40 is ideal for DJ use and listening to electronic music rather than any form of production work. The best part is that it has comprehensive coverage that engulfs a room. Of course, it's thanks to the diffuser that deploys the classic Pioneer DECO technology to ensure the high frequencies it produces spread across the room. As a result, you could be far away from the speaker but still hear the music it plays. However, you have to be in the same room as the speaker to listen to the song's being played. The best thing about the diffuser is that it ensures the speaker only produces clear and smooth sounds that won't be polluted by distortions, regardless of how high you increase the volume. Only after the volume is above 70%, one can start to notice unpleasant artifacts coming through. However, having them blast at just below that amount will be more than enough power for most casual uses. Great studio monitors are probably the most important sonic tool to help you create and shape your music – they are, essentially, your digital ears. The low end is most certainly accentuated on the Pioneer DM-40s. Whether that is good, depends on what you want from your monitors.

Pioneer DM-40 Review [2023] - Excellent Monitors For DJs Pioneer DM-40 Review [2023] - Excellent Monitors For DJs

This 2-way active speaker has an AB amplifier embedded in the left speaker. You’ll also find connections and controls for the speaker on the left speaker. One limitation to this speaker is that you can't swap which speaker functions as a left or right speaker. If you want a flexible speaker placement, you can achieve it with the available audio connections and how long your power cable is. This is a nice surprise at the low price point. Wood helps to stabilize the cone movement, thus making for a tighter sonic punch. Anecdotally, people also say that over time the tone of a wooden cabinet improves. Unlike what you might have heard before about budget speakers and how they sound, this budget speaker seems to raise the bar for how budget speakers should sound. For starters, beginner DJ would love the punch it produces when they play songs through it. It doesn't punch as hard as premium speakers, but I think it's simply impressive, especially for a portable budget speaker. Every DJ needs speakers to be heard and the DM-40 range by Pioneer DJ is a compact bookshelf speaker system that aims to be more than just a DJ speaker. With various inputs and even inbuilt Bluetooth on some models, is the DM-40 the ultimate speaker choice for those with limited space and budget? In this review we find out! Build QualityThe DM 40 monitors are missing some strength and accuracy in the top end. Each speaker has 21W of power behind them – this is not a lot, but more than enough to practice your mixing skills comfortably, and casually enjoy music, movies, and games. While one will not experience the bliss of intricate sonic details, the overall good quality is impressive at such a low price. Pioneer DM 40: The Final Verdict While these speakers are reasonably compact, they’re not tiny, and they’re not particularly light, either: Some speakers down at this end of the market are smaller, and other lighter, being made predominantly of plastic, but the Pioneer DJ DM-40s have a reassuring wooden construction and weight to them. This usually translates to better sound quality, because the cabinet remains still as the speaker cones move to produce the sound. The speakers are also front ported, meaning there’s a slot in the front of each to allow air to move in and out of the unit for a fuller bass. Truthfully, the bass isn’t excellent, but it's not bad either. But you would only appreciate it when you play it alongside a speaker that functions in a similar capacity as this speaker. It would fill up a small, enclosed space. Nevertheless, the bass is still punchy, warm, and deep enough for beginner DJs.

There’s no need to choose between DJ and music speakers with the Pioneer DM-40D-BT, as they’re all set for both roles. Simply flip a switch and the speakers’ characteristics adapt to suit DJ use (DJ mode) or music (Production mode). Using clever DSP (Digital Signal Processing) technology, the difference in sound is like listening to two entirely different pairs of speakers.

The DM 40’s come in a pretty small size factor. They aren’t so tiny and light that this would be a selling point, but the speakers sure won’t crowd your room. It’s also worth noting that the speakers bluetooth will play at the same time as any physically connected devices. With no way of turning off the bluetooth module, anybody previously paired to your speaker can play over your DJ set with ease. Our Thoughts With built-in amplification, there's no need for a separate amplifier. With a punchy Class D amp built-in, these speakers are more than capable of making themselves heard on your mixing desk. Simply plug the active speaker into the mains and connect the other, passive, speaker via conventional speaker cable. Subtle in design, the moulded front panel visually looks very professional with a crescent diffuser moulded just below the tweeter. The diffuser not only looks great but helps direct the high frequencies around the bass driver. The speaker delivers a more equal sound to a wider area as a result.
