Description

Mix 10ml of HSK Tree fern feed with 2 litres of water and apply directly to the crown (top) of the fern where the leaves emerge from.

It is also important that the tree fern does not dry out especially if the fern is in a pot. If you do need to water in winter make sure it is when the temperature is not likely to go below 1°C. Tree fern specialists HSK have developed this specific concentrated Tree Fern Feed to get the best results from their wonderful tree fern logs. Ferns are considered to be 'top feeders' as the plant growth area occupies around 12 inches (30cm) below the crown/top of the plant. The remainder of the trunk is made up of the root system and old frond bases. In its natural environment the crown is often found to be full of decaying leaf matter that has fallen from the canopy above. This helps retain moisture, protects the crown in winter from the cold and provides nutrients as the leaf matter decomposes. A large amount of moisture and nutrient exchange is through the crown, so it would be serious neglect not to water and feed ferns from the top. In their native habitat, tree ferns grow in dense shady wooded areas, beneath the main tree canopy. Leaves falling off trees gather in the crown of the tree fern, and mix with rain, slowly feeding the top of the log, where the new fronds emerge. This is unlikely to happen here in UK gardens, even in shady areas, so this specialist tree fern feed mimics the nutrients provided in their habitat, with a balanced feed to encourage strong frond growth. On arrival, your tree fern should be anchored vertically and thoroughly soaked (remember to water the crown of the plant as well as the trunk). Make sure the crown of the fern is always kepts moist and during the summer you may need to water your fern daily. We recommend the use of HSK TREE FERN FEED which will give your tree fern the food it needs to produce vigorous growth. The best time to start feeding your ferns is after the frosts have stoppped normally around the middle of April in the UK. Then feed your ferns weekly during the growing season into the crown using a solution of 10ml of HSK Tree Fern Feed per 2ltrs of water. We recomend to stop using HSK Tree Fern Feed when the growing season has stopped around the middle of October. Tree Ferns and Wollemi Pine are architectural plants that work well with our selection of driftwood sculptures from New Zealand.

The most recent addition to our specialist ranges is the “ Bamboo Control System”, often referred to as a Bamboo Barrier and is installed to direct, control and enhance the growth of the bamboo. This control system is being used more and more to create areas of bamboo, adding sound and movement to a garden. Tree fern specialists HSK have developed this specific concentrated Tree Fern Feed to get the best results from their wonderful tree fern logs. In their native habitat, tree ferns grow in dense shady wooded areas, beneath the main tree canopy. Feed every week or so in growing season (May til September), this 500ml will last a least 2 years if used as per the labe. It can alos be used to feed any other garden ferns in shady locations.

The tree fern is an evergreen plant, although in many areas of Europe it is likely that in Winter frost will 'burn off' the existing fronds and potentially damage the following season's growth. Hence, unless your ferns are in a frost-free environment, protection from frost is advised. The best solution is to use horticultural fleece, straw or even fallen leaves to put into the crown. If you live in a very cold area or it is a very cold winter you may also wish to wrap the top 30cm of your tree fern as well to prevent the growing point from freezing. Do not cut off the fronds as unless it is a harsh winter the fronds will stay green and the weight of the fronds help to keep the crown of the fern pulled open. We have found that ferns which constantly have their fronds cut off in Autumn tend to get crowns which taper inwards. This closes the crown causing the new fronds to struggle and eventually produces smaller fronds. When the last frost is gone and before the fronds start to unfurl remove your winter protection to avoid hindering the growth of new fronds. We are also the main trade supplier of Wollemi Pine which was thought to be extinct but was discovered in 1994 in the Wollemi National Park 200km west of Sydney Australia. Tree ferns can be fed weekly into the crown (the centre top of the plant, where the leaves emerge from) during the warmest months of the year (May to August). If you have young or very small tree ferns they should be kept in a frost free environment just to be safe.
