Description

The story is of a girl named Lila who lives in a village in Kenya; where they have not seen rain for several months. The truly neat continuing theme throughout the book with the illustrations is the use of color in correspondence with the text. Students use the focus text as a basis to develop their reading, writing and SPaG skills and engage with a range of comprehension and discussion based activities. Your class will learn key information regarding evaporation, condensation, precipitation and collection, begin to recognise the sequence and understand the importance of the water cycle for life on earth.

Follow the story of Lila and her village in Kenya, and how she saves her people from drought by learning the secret of rain from her grandfather. All resources included, excluding ‘tell me grid’ which was found online and therefore not owned by myself. There has been no rain in Lila’s Kenyan village for many weeks and “Without water there can be no life”, her mother says. This resource pack will ensure that your pupils include all of the important features when writing a diary entry while saving you hours of preparation time. David's picture books are published in the UK, Denmark, Sweden, Spain (Catalan and Spanish) Columbia, Korea the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, South Africa and Japan.

Your class can read through and tick the statements to see if it was used successfully to persuade the sky.Beautiful language – ‘the sky was ebony with emotion’ – accompanies delicate illustrations that convey the sparseness of life and landscape.

There are so many ways to use this book and I feel it is something that kids could really relate too. You can also allow your class to reflect more on persuasive writing and think about how Lila persuaded the sky in the story and the reasons for it.

I love the illustration style, somehow the intensity of the sun, comparison of the scale of human and the nature and the hope of the rain, is wonderfully conveyed through the beautiful watercolors.
