Along with their two occasional companions (and, presumably, only other friends in the galaxy, besides each other) Crazy Chryssie (D. Fun to read for a bit if you're in the right mood but perhaps a little repetitive all in one volume: the two protagonists are violent and incite chaos and end up OK, repeat. R. and Quinch it also includes the one-page advice column stories written by Jamie Delano and illustrated by Alan Davis and his long-time inker Mark Farmer. They’re nicely drawn, and raise the occasional smile, but rapidly run into the brick wall of repetition, which was inevitable when violence was always the answer. Moore's gift for creating dialogue that sounds naturalistic was one of his biggest influences on the comicbook industry.

R." (for "Diminished Responsibility") Dobbs, (who looks a bit like a Marvelverse Skrull with a quiff) and Ernest Errol Quinch, his muscular purple skinned companion in crime. My sense of chronology continues to become increasingly wonky as we jump from the early-to-mid-1990s From Hell of the last two weeks to a collected edition of a group of short stories written a decade before From Hell reached its climax.

They think that using atomic weapons to rearrange the geography of a planet makes for a jolly prank. Another luminary of the comic book industry, Davis' pencils and pens are a good medium for the spirit of Moore's scripts.R." stands for "Diminished Responsibility"), a skinny, lanky, teenage delinquent who boasts a genius IQ, enjoys acts of extreme violence and destruction, and looks like a cross between a gremlin and a skrull with a pompadour, and Dobbs' best friend Ernest Erroll Quinch, a large, purple-skinned brute who is much, much quieter than Dobbs as he prefers writing to talking. s dialogue is convoluted with a verbal complexity, a form of comedy dating back at least to Damon Runyon’s Guys and Dolls, and as this appeared in 2000AD, it’s also worth noting that the staging and pacing are similar to the funnier Judge Dredd stories of the time. He's been reading some form of comics since childhood and has been exploring the medium with enthusiasm for a decade. While I appreciated the tongue in cheek random violence of these characters, there was something a little too blunt about it for my tastes.

C. and Stiggs (a reference lost on most UK readers in the ‘80s, including myself) with a hint of ‘50s rock and roll sensibilities too. It’s a great sequence (with the final use of the word “Eep” creating a big laugh), and so is Chryssie’s ensuing mad rampage where she steals and kills and ruins D. Alan Moore is a genius and his work's widely known through the movies it spawned: Watchmen, V for Vendetta, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen etc - some of them a tribute to the original, some a desecration. This time Quinch is narrating proceedings, and it’s a three part story where much to Ernest’s horror D. It all began at The Galaxy's Greatest Comic where a young, budding Alan Moore was frequently tasked with writing for the Tharg's Future Shocks and Time Twisters strips.

However, their star burnt brightly and are still fondly remembered to this day as one of the all-time classic strips to appear in 2000 AD. Rereading Alan Moore and Alan Davis's work on Captain Britain it's amazing how quickly both improved, and no wonder Davis went onto a very successful career in US superhero comics. While Alan Moore is mostly known nowadays for writing dark, serious stories set in crapsack worlds, such as Watchmen and V for Vendetta, D.
