A side effect of this is that it’s also very easy to find hidden orbs, crystals and challenge rooms – you just need to go the way the camera isn’t facing and voila! Lute not only will attack more as Unity builds up, but you will be able to do Synergy Attacks once it’s high enough. The camera can cause half the issues and enemies have way too much health, but controlling Briar can become effortless with practice and Lute’s situational counters never get old. This game, as hectic as it is, takes a few hours to master, and then it’s only a matter of maintaining the best combos to get the best score at the end of each level.

Learn the Truth of Your Origin - Through a dark story filled with sisterly love and sacrifice, Briar and Lute discover the truth about themselves and their Chimera powers while working together and staying true to their unbreakable bond. But it’s also a little counterproductive – you can slow a move, but you’ve still got to dodge it before it comes crashing down. Weapons are unlocked and upgraded throughout the game and can even be switched on the fly to unleash stylish and highly devastating combo attacks. The most important aspect of the game is the gameplay however, which is pretty much exclusively based around battles. It’s supposedly extremely harmful to Briar, something that will boggle her mind and corrupt her soul after too many uses.We also get to see other sides of characters anyway, like we get to see the emotional side of Briar, Layton who starts as a total jerk slowly grows on you, and you get to learn why Donovan decided to become “The Shadeless”. The cutscenes are also very nicely directed and animated, with plenty of good close-ups and interesting angles. However some 4-5 hours in, 5 chapters or so, I had still only barely entered the city, and I still knew next to nothing about who these two are or were. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. There’s a full suite of accessibility options, as well, which is pretty helpful for colorblind folk like myself.

I was pretty concerned during that stage that there was no depth to the game or the combat, but then you get to an actual stage and tutorial and it is better. I guess what I’m trying to say is that the way enemy encounters are structured is important, and it’s even more so in Soulstice as you need to utilize Lute’s fields to defeat most of the enemies you’ll encounter. As if having this additional button on top of dodging and attacking wasn’t enough, enemies in Soulstice are color-coded either blue or red.

The edginess of the story had me zoning out in the beginning, the fixed camera angles annoyed me, and I was overall meh on the combat and Briar and Lute (I actually didn’t think Briar had a good voice actor, but granted I didn’t know them yet). There are 25 levels altogether which isn’t an issue in itself but my completion time for each level varied between ten and forty minutes. A few tweaks would make this a fantastic game but even as it is fans of the character action games should definitely give it a chance.
