The book’s cover attracted me due to the bright colours and I really enjoyed reading about Bella and her adventures! As children begin to read for themselves the rich tradition of witches continues with The Worst Witch series and Harry Potter, of course, to name just two. My new funny series Bella Broomstick is about a young witch who is so bad at magic, she is expelled from the Magic Realm and sent off in disgrace to the Person World to be fostered by human beings instead.

Bella Broomstick Series by Lou Kuenzler - Goodreads

I thought this was a good book and I like the characters and my favourite one was the skeleton witch teacher. This book is about a witch who has an aunt that won’t let her sleep she keeps waking her up in the night and telling her that she is a bad witch and will never be any good at doing spells. If you’re familiar with Lou’s previous books, then Bella Broomstick needs adding to your must-reads list! From the youngest picture books – like Meg and Mog, Winnie the Witch or Room on The Broom – the benign but bumbling witch is a familiar figure with her pointy hat askew and cloak flying out behind her. The technical storage or access is strictly necessary for the legitimate purpose of enabling the use of a specific service explicitly requested by the subscriber or user, or for the sole purpose of carrying out the transmission of a communication over an electronic communications network. Her nasty Aunt Hemlock sends her to live in Person World, and she isn’t allowed to do any magic ever again. Think of the glorious comic havoc caused every time Samantha twitched her nose in the television series Bewitched. But my husband, who is Swiss, says that she would be Bella Besenstiel in German, which I think sounds brilliant.

Bella Broomstick | Summer Reading Challenge Bella Broomstick | Summer Reading Challenge

It's her first day at Merrymeet Primary School, which is bound to be better than Creepy Castle School for Wizards and Witches, where Bella almost blew up the dungeon. H was really excited to get to ask Lou Kuenzler some questions too – and Lou herself tells us more about Bella Broomstick. Luckily for Bella, her new foster parents are much kinder than her mean, old, witchy Aunt Hemlock (who always served frog’s spawn porridge for breakfast). Bella Broomstick doesn’t have as many pages as the Shrinking Violet books – an ideal size for a bookworm like H to finish in ONE DAY!When I do school visits, children often come up with brilliant ideas of things they could measure themselves in. But when nasty Piers Seymour is mean to her new friend Esme, she is tempted to use her magical powers to teach Piers a lesson. Ants are another good one, but it might take a while to train them all to stand in a nice neat line while you measured yourself against them. Even when that ‘evil’ heritage is stripped away and we see friendly witches at the heart of stories, I think something of that darkness always remains.

Bella Broomstick by Lou Kuenzler – Mum Friendly Bella Broomstick by Lou Kuenzler – Mum Friendly

H is a big fan of her books, so when we were given the chance to review and feature Lou on Mum Friendly, she was super excited! As I have only just finished writing Bella Broomstick in English, it has not been translated into any other languages yet. And she’s obsessed with things no good witch would ever need…like toothbrushes, fluffy slippers, and a pink flamingo pen.Bella secretly casts a real spell (hint: it involves a lot of bunnies), but it doesn’t go the way she had planned.
