One of the first legal distilleries to be built in the northern Highlands, it was also the first whisky plant north of Inverness to have electricity and a telephone (in 1887). Although the fair Jane married another, she always carried a torch for her first love and watched from afar as he lived his life to the full. The General withdrew his consent to the marriage after learning of Hugh’s apparently debilitating wounds, and an attempt to arrange an elopement was abandoned when Jane announced that she could not bring herself to defy her father’s wishes. Not long afterwards, she married a wealthy local landowner. In April 2013 owner Diageo announced a new renovation of the distillery. [2] They also announced a new distillery with 16 new stills will be placed next to the old distillery. The new distillery is planned to have a different name than Teaninich, and produce a separate whisky. [4]

Robert Innes Cameron (who became proprietor in 1904) later became chairman of the Malt Distillers Association. Teaninich distillery wasn't one of them, as it had built around for more than 150 years. But it was, nevertheless, decided by the owners, DCL, that the Teaninich distillery needed both a major upgrade and increased capacity. He and his brother General John Munro were notable as being benign and caring landlords in a region which was brutally hit by the Highland Clearances. It is a great honour to be the manager of Teaninich distillery as we celebrate its 200th year,’ said Diane Farrell, distillery manager. ‘At Teaninich heritage and progress have always gone hand-in-hand. We are one of the most innovative and modern distilleries in Scotland, while also being one of the oldest, and we are proud to continue that legacy of innovation today.’ IDF confirms death of 19-year-old soldier Noa Marciano after Hamas terrorists released horrific hostage video that also showed her body In 1970 the distillery was greatly expanded, and an entire new building with six new stills was taken in operation. [3] The four older stills remained in operation alongside the new stills. The old side of the distillery was then updated over the next decade. First, new installations for milling, mashing and fermentation were built in 1973, and in 1975 the distillery added a dark grains plant, which produces cattle feed from the draff. [2] In 1984 the old side of the distillery was mothballed, and the new side followed the next year, temporarily ending production entirely. [2] The new side of the distillery resumed production in 1991. The old side didn't resume production, and was demolished in 1999. [3] In 2000 a mash filter press was installed in the distillery, which is unique in Scottish malt whisky production; all other Scottish whisky distilleries use mash tuns. [2] Born in 1770, Munro was the son of Royal Navy Captain James Munro, Laird of Teaninich, and inherited the estate after his father’s death in 1788.

A completely new Teaninich distillery with six stills was built next to the old with four stills and, all of a sudden, it had become one of the largest distilleries at the time with a capcity of six million litres.

Hugh was eager to follow other landowners in promoting whisky distilling. Distilleries provided a strong demand for local barley, and yielded high-quality animal feed and fertiliser as by-products of the distilling process. Like many Highland distillers, Hugh was infuriated by the Excise laws which discouraged honest businessmen from setting up distilleries, and which effectively encouraged others to make whisky illicitly to meet the growing popular demand for the spirit. The distillery is also notable for being the first to use a mash filter, rather than the traditional mash tun, and is one of only two distilleries in Scotland employing this process (the other being InchDairnie). In 1821 he complained that none of the public houses in nearby Dingwall was selling whisky from a licensed distillery. Now, romantic souls will say that this is all very well, but what happened to Hugh’s former fiancée after she was forced to break off their engagement? As fans of early 19th-century English literature might have guessed, there was a tragic ending to the story.
