The Berserk Deluxe Editions look amazing and are of high quality, and as of now, they are my favorite special edition manga release to come out in recent years. The manga was a finalist for the second, third, fourth, and fifth installments of the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 1998, [181] 1999, [182] 2000, [183] and 2001, [184] respectively.

When comparing the Berserk Deluxe Editions to the individual volumes, of both the DMP and Dark Horse paperbacks, the most obvious difference is their size. Berserk is a no-holds-barred series created by Kentaro Miura that features elaborate art, an absorbing story full of carnage and sacrifice, and a protagonist, Guts, who is one of the most brutal and unrelenting characters in all of manga. For those who aren't familiar with the late Kentaro Miura's Berserk, it tells the story of Guts, a mercenary swordsman who was betrayed and killed by his boss, Griffith--Griffith sacrificed all of his own men as part of a ritual to achieve great power, and now Guts is out for revenge, and it's gonna be very bloody. Griffith regains control of his host when day breaks and unnerves Guts with his inability to harm him before Zodd arrives. After an incredible display of war, romance, political drama, moral and philosophical musings, heartbreaking trauma, fascinating worldbuilding and chilling foreshadowing, the Golden Age arc ends on the single most shocking, depressing and mind blowing finale I’ve ever witnessed in a fantasy story. The Artwork of Berserk was released for the 2021 Large Berserk Exhibition; [154] it was sold exclusively during the event, but it was later announced that it would be available for purchase after the event. Credit: Anime Collective What are the Berserk Deluxe Editions and how do they differ from the individual volumes? Remembering Kentaro Miura, legendary creator of 'Berserk,' which inspired countless fantasy stories".

Berserk (written by Kentaro Miura) has been serialized irregularly since the October 1989 issue of Monthly Animal House, the predecessor of Young Animal magazine. Guts' group encounters the witch Flora and her apprentice Schierke while saving a village from marauding trolls. In North America, Dark Horse Comics, in conjunction with Digital Manga Publishing, announced the license of the manga in 2003. Join Guts and Puck as they spill the guts of countless evil forces… and maybe learn to like each other in the process? Miura was known for his spectacular, apocalyptic style; specific images—a humongous sword, a monster cloaked in shadow—are immediately recognizable to his fans.

And while he has been great right from the first page of volume one, he has improved over the many years of working on Berserk. For newcomers, this arc is a confusing yet exciting sword and sorcery tale of a vengeful barbarian warrior hunting demons in hopes of settling the score with his mortal enemy Griffith, and the evil lovecraftian beings that govern the world from the abyss known only as the Godhand. Anne Lauenroth of Anime News Network wrote that Griffith is "not evil at all," but "arrogant and brutally realistic about human nature. According to Miura, the series' dark fantasy setting was inspired by the 1982 film Conan the Barbarian and the Elric of Melniboné series. While Berserk is more so a dark fantasy manga, its pages are full of so much horror that it landed a spot on my top horror manga of all time list.
