The narrative achievement: Based on an original concept of Kurosawa's which began as a "day in the life" documentary of a samurai's existence, Kurosawa developed the idea into this breathtaking film of samurai who save a village. This simple but complexly nuanced human story involves us in different social classes in an historical framework. We come to know individual peasants and samurai, and feel that we know significant things about them, their motivations, hopes and fears.

Kurosawa is smart in so many ways here, one of which is to orient the viewer to the village and its surroundings by showing the leader of the group plan its defense. In addition to Mifune's character, he also lightens the mood with the forbidden love between the young samurai apprentice (Isao Kimura) and a young woman masquerading as a boy (Keiko Tsushima). Their scene in the woodland flowers is gorgeous. violence is endless and the repercussions eternal, the flames rage on as the innocents die. however, what Kurosawa also realises is that violence is the coolest thing that you can ever capture on celluloid. that central dichotomy, the merging of visceral horror and shameful pleasure at the sight of violence, is part of what makes Seven Samurai so timeless. one second, you’ll witness the sadness of a dying innocent, the other you’ll be cheering the slaughter of an enemy combatant. either way, a mother loses their child, a child loses their father.Armes [ modifier | modifier le code ] Un samouraï en armure avec son sabre, vers 1860.
