The Mombasa Club was an essential part of Colonial life and became famous and popular as a welcoming, idyllic meeting point allowing for leisure, where its members held lively debates or interchanged news, whilst sipping their Mombasa Club gin & tonics (an exclusive gin from England that was specially distilled and bottled for the consumption and pleasure of its members). The city was a trading post. That meant the East India Company was inevitably involved in the area, and its agents had to live there. According to local folklore, the cave-temple was found a long time ago when a group of local herders were puzzled after they noticed that one of their cows regularly released all of her milk at a specific yet random spot on the hills. They are then said to have approached some Hindu families living in the area to ask if they had any idea behind the strange behaviour by the cow. The group then teamed up, made their way to the spot and started digging.
