Today, 10 years later, Jeff’s music continues to inspire and influence fellow musicians, artists and fans around the globe. Though he was signed to a major label, Buckley was forever mindful of upholding the sacredness of his music and avoiding the evils of commercialism—necessary objectives at a time when alternative culture was being streamlined by corporations at a breakneck pace. Anyone who has had the pleasure of seeing Jalen perform live knows that he is one of the most captivating performers on today's soul scene. But in the context of this release—and the tragedy intertwined with it—the conclusion is too easy, too pat. There was an exception: Radiohead, whose frontman Thom Yorke counted Buckley as a major inspiration on his vocal style, released OK Computer the week before the singer’s death.

He already had Grondhal, met drummer Matt Johnson through Grace executive producer Steve Berkowitz, and, midway through recording the album, brought in guitarist Michael Tighe (who eventually contributed "So Real", to which Buckley added a chorus and put on the record in place of the bluesy "Forget Her"). Finally I can hear Hallelujah on vinyl without disgraceful vinyl noise :) THIS is the pressing to get if you don’t already own this record or if you are like me looking for a sonic upgrade. Afterwards, he played solo gigs, sometimes incorporating friend and bassist Mick Grondhal, and assisted by a growing legion of nighthawk fans, was soon signed by Columbia as a solo artist.

And there was another artist whose battles with commerce were always in the back of Buckley’s mind: his father Tim. The song had the potential to encapsulate all sides of Buckley’s persona—the weirdo, the hopeless lover, the charming clown—into something that could pump both hearts and bodies. Significant tracks include the now-classic cover of Cohen’s “Hallelujah”, Buckley’s own “Last Goodbye” and “Lover, You Should Have Come Over”. Grace was not an instant hit by any means—the record sold 2,000 copies in its opening week and only went platinum at the beginning of this year.

His artsier tendencies sometimes clashed with Columbia’s bottom line, but in general he was given the room—and cash—to make his own choices, with the label figuring they’d eventually recoup on their investment later on. However, as he revealed in The Making of Grace, the behind-the-scenes feature that leads off the third disc DVD in Columbia's new "Legacy" edition reissue of his debut full-length, he needed a band. Such fluidity would be unique in any era, but especially in the early ’90s, when the internet had yet to fully flatten barriers between styles, Buckley’s musical interests were freakishly broad. Particularly during “Hallelujah”, there is a background noise that really takes away from the intimate experience.Worst of all I've noticed on quiet tracks that I can also hear a faint, distorted echo of the music from around 1. Lost the cd among many others while moving town and changing schools, left a gap in my heart, especially once I heard the news of his early death on the radio.
