The Saz is the grandfather of the Greek Bouzouki. It's originated in Central Asia where Turks lived before their westward migration. Like the guitar in Spain and the bouzouki in Greece, the Saz is the most popular stringed instrument in Turkey. Although similar in shape to the Greek Bouzouki, the construction, size and sound of the Saz is different. You need a baglama saz to be able to play the microtones (Perde) of Arabic music. However, in both types of playing, it is important to know how to make the best use of the air in the lungs. The most important feature that should be known in all types of zurna is the correct closing of the holes during playing. The person who wants to play the zurna adjusts the sound output and timbre by opening and closing the holes on the instrument by blowing through the "sipsi" in the mouth. While playing the zurna, one should never stop breathing. The sound of the zurna comes out with tremors. In 1932, Uzeyir Hajibeyov created an orchestra consisted of Azerbaijani folk instruments. The air is stored in the leather section and is let into the nav section by pressing the bag under the arm. Nav is the part where the melody is played. It also has two parts called Analik and Dillik. They all share one and the same sound inductor - the so called "kalem" - which is actually a very tight (and short) double reed, sometimes made out of wheat leaves. The longest (and lowest) is the Kaba zurna, used in northern Turkey and Bulgaria. As a rule of thumb, a zurna is conical and made of wood.

These varieties are also called coarse zurna, medium-coarse zurna, and zil zurna. Zurna can be produced from many tree species such as juniper, ash, dogwood, boxwood, willow, plum, mulberry, linden, and walnut. The length of the zurna should be at least 300 millimeters and at most 317 millimeters. A fork is attached to the head of his body. Have you heard of the zurna? It's actually one of the oldest traditional wind instruments in Turkey, and it's super important for the mehter band. It's a really versatile instrument and can totally hold its own in a solo performance. The sound is pretty amazing too - it can be colourful, lively, pastoral, imposing, and emotional. You can get all sorts of sounds out of it, from sliding notes to short, sharp ones. The zurna is a big deal in military music too and has been around for many years. Even outside of official ceremonies, it's got a huge performance scene. You might hear it at a wedding in a small village in Anatolia, or at a party in a district of Istanbul. It's just one of those instruments that really fits in anywhere! Cigirtma is a Turkish folk instrument of the wind type. Cigirtma is made from the wing bone of the eagle. It is known to be used mostly by the shepherds and is an almost forgotten instrument today. It has a total of seven melody keys with six on the top and one underneath It is about 15-30 cm long. Mey The need for high pressure makes it suitable for playing without stop using circular breathing. A small pacifier-style disk that the lips may lean on helps the lip muscles that hold the high-pressure air, rest, and recover during long non-stop playing sessions. The combination of constant volume and non-stop playing makes the zurna unsuitable for emphasis of the rhythm. It has therefore been played almost invariably along with big drums that both provide the rhythm and the lower frequencies that travel further away than the zurna's loud, high pitched sound. Mehterhane preserved its existence changing continuously until the Janissary corps was abolished. According to its final form, each one was composed of nine davul-s, nine zurna-s, nine nakkare-s, nine cymbals and nine horns. This band was called Dokuz katlı mehterhane (mehterhane composed of instruments, each instrument’s number is nine). Mehter had many improvements in its music and performance parallel to its organization and establishment. Furthermore, renovations in the areas of art and culture influenced the music also. The studies and compositions of the music teachers of the palace in XVIIth century such as Hanende Recep Çelebi, Zurnazenbaşı İbrahim Ağa, Eyyubi Mehmet Çelebi, Solakzade Mehmed Hendemi (at the same time very famous historian) and III. Selim, the sultan and one of the great music masters of XVIIth century, had influence on the renovation of the mehter musikisi and the growing of the repertoire.
