On the nose: The initial impression is of caramelized brown sugar meeting a gentle note of dill, the latter being a telltale sign of MGP whiskey. The rye component in next year’s Campfire release, which blends rye, Bourbon and blended malt Scotch, will be entirely High West’s own for the first time. The finish is long for this slightly lower proof and I'm left with a satisfying simmer of all the dark fruit of this world. Sipping back and forth reveals just how much of a dingus I am, because these whiskeys are damn near identical.

Still, those of you who have noticed my proclivity for quoting Stratford-upon-Avon’s most famous denizen will know that I’m fully in my element here.On first pour we have an baked apple and orange citrus rich fruit blast, a good pinch of pepper and ginger. Named with Shakespeare in mind, this whiskey is a blend of straight rye whiskies finished in french oak and port barrels from Utah in the USA. Mix in the fact that you have a proud distillery that has been making spirits since 2007 wanting to get their own name on the map, and you have an inconsistent recipe for a bottling that is only released once per year. I think if there were a bit more pronounced malty and/or ex-bourbon cask flavor, this would be better and more balanced. Now I’m not sure if that means it’s essentially younger Lasanta or if it’s a marriage of whisky made up from packages which have been matured in ex bourbon and packages extra matured in Oloroso. A Midwinter Night’s Dram Act 11 is one of the best such releases in the past five years, and I can’t wait to do a blind tasting with acts 7 through 11. Deep inhales back and forth between both glasses likely make me look rather insane, but they also reveal that this glass has just a bit more bite, effervescence and creamy clout. Palate: A rich, warming, peppery texture leading into myriad flavors of chocolate orange, ginger, walnuts, praline and some sweet butter candy.
