In the process of tracking the woman he comes to dub Satsuma, Gary finds himself stumbling his way into the midst of what appears to be a crime ring. If his name were missing from the title page, then riffs such as the narrator’s account of how he copes with anxiety – he imagines that he’s wearing “a magnificent pair of tan yellow clogs… made of a hard, almost translucent toffee”, while passers-by shout admiring comments such as, “Those clogs look more than sufficient, Gary! So, it’s no surprise that I’m a Bob Mortimer fan and have been appreciating his quirky style of humour for years now. Mortimer has also just penned the foreword to How We Fish: The Love, Life And Joy Of The Riverbank by Whitehouse and the show's fishing consultant John Bailey, published 14th September by Mudlark. It’s almost as if you’re in the living room with them, laughing along as the generations clash, but also realising that this is how history is made.

Your enjoyment will largely depend on your view of the main character, Gary, whose quirkily comedic observations will amuse or irritate, according to taste. So many comedians have published novels this year that I have begun to wonder whether writing one is an assignment in a yet-to-be-broadcast episode of Taskmaster. Kingsolver’s raw and empathetic writing make this a gripping and vital tale for our times too, passionately tackling Big Pharma, healthcare, addiction, education and poverty. It might be slightly confusing for younger children, but older ones will love the whimsical style and sparkling array of characters. Mortimer was impressed by the performance, particularly the character Tappy Lappy, which was Reeves attempting to tap dance while wearing a Bryan Ferry mask and planks on his feet.

The story includes many of the usual crime thriller topes – from a possible femme fatale to the calmly intimidating nemesis – but also so many sweetly surreal peculiarities that it could only have been written by Bob Mortimer. This was such a weird book, I think I ultimately came to suspend belief and embraced it for what it was. Since March 2016, Mortimer has written and co-hosted regular comedy podcast, Athletico Mince, alongside Andy Dawson. Please Note: By their very nature, all signed books will have been handled several times before they get to you. It traces the life he enjoyed but still brought him pain, and he owns his mistakes and discusses his flaws openly.

He told Kathy Burke on her Where There's A Will, There's A Wake podcast, that he would not be reviving his semi-autobiographical, disaffected legal assistant character Gary Thorn from the first novel. A failed solicitor, he is drifting through life – the office, the pub, a barely furnished flat, lacklustre relationships.Mortimer has appeared on numerous episodes of the Sky1 comedy panel game Duck Quacks Don't Echo, hosted by his regular Would I Lie to You? As a thriller, it’s admittedly lightweight but because Mortimer has such affection for his characters and appetite for regular flights of fancy that can sprinkle magic over humdrum situations, it’s a genuinely enjoyable debut. I generally avoid the celebrity author books, but TV and comedy legend Bob Mortimer seemed like one to try and I had high hopes. A page-turning story with a cast of unforgettable characters, The Satsuma Complex is the brilliantly funny smash hit first novel by bestselling author and comedian Bob Mortimer. While meeting a work colleague for a drink one night, his attention is taken by an attractive young woman who is sitting alone reading a copy of The Satsuma Complex. In April 2005, however, Reeves was removed from the adverts, after he was convicted of drink-driving. A sixth series was broadcast in late 2009, followed by a seventh series in mid-2010, and an eighth in 2011. In a 2005 poll to find the Comedians' Comedian, the duo were voted the 9th greatest comedy act of all time by fellow comedians and comedy insiders.
