Leave everything to dry for 5 minutes then clamp the swivel loop between the pliers teeth again and carefully paint a layer of varnish on to your float. I have completed my floats like this before but to make it completely waterproof allow the varnish to dry for 24 hours then paint another layer of varnish on just to completely seal it, again allowing it to dry for 24 hours. That's my take on it...Others will offer different solutions and may well disagree with mine. Many ways to skin a cat, as they say !!! Next you need to very carefully take small shavings off the piece of balsa at the end with the swivel in until the balsa is roughly blended in to the end of the swivel barrel. Many will have favourite makes and colours and they probably work just as well as the above. All I know is that I have floats many years old finished in the way described above and they are still fine. In fact I have left some out in deep winter to test durability and still they survive.

This Zuperpaint is enamel based. Until dry can be removed with white spirit or similar. Can be overcoated if necessary with clear lacquer to create a very hard wearing finish.Bought two for painting old floats . At 73 yrs my eyes are not as good as they used to be . These type of paints are not particularly cheap but with integral brush and the quality of paint its worth paying for. It may seem daft putting a matt varnish over a gloss finish but that last coat of flourescent gloss certainly makes a hell of a light reflective and therefore visible difference under a matt varnish - best of both worlds.
