About this deal

The fourth CD features the 18th April gig at the Convention Center Arena, San Antonio, Texas, and includes material that was part of 2003’s Elvis: Close-Up box set, however it has been newly remixed for this release. The critic considered that "there is no 'real' Elvis left", as he closed the review suggesting that the documentary "sanctified him". The documentary on the blu-ray exists because filmmakers Pierre Adidge and Robert Abel went on the road with Elvis Presley to chronicle this tour. JOE MARCHESE (Editor) joined The Second Disc shortly after its launch in early 2010, and has since penned daily news and reviews about classic music of all genres. A song like ‘You Gave Me A Mountain’ has an amazing dynamic range with the quiet sections revealing even more emotion because of it.

With that, and two stunning performances done in Hampton Roads that day, it was time to “Take it home”. Following the four core concerts, the box then surveys Presley's rehearsals at RCA Studios in Hollywood on March 30-31, 1972. Critic Howell Raines pointed out that Adidge and Abel failed to present Presley's "appeal as a performer". Parker asked MGM to remove parts of Presley's interview from the film, including the singer's negative comments about his acting career. They warned Presley they would only work on the project if he acted naturally; Presley agreed he would. The reviewer remarked Parker's discrete appearance on the documentary and he praised the cinematography. Though there are plentiful false starts and incomplete takes, these tracks open a fascinating window onto Elvis' creative process. This version is at a slower tempo and the new dynamic mix emphasises Elvis’ belief and love for gospel music. The audio mix is extremely good here with clean piano plus James Burton’s rockin’guitar (which for some reason this faded down in the movie).

The movie’s 50th anniversary was in November 2022 and again SONY / RCA still did not make the hoped for release date, instead the new box-set being finally released in late January 2023. So they are trying to find a way to make ‘Elvis On Tour’ available in digital format but it’s not going to be a restoration for scratch like TTWII. Only 90 minutes of footage was used for the On Tour film that went on to win the Golden Globe Award in 1972. Elvis on Tour is a 1972 American concert film starring Elvis Presley during his fifteen-city spring tour earlier that year.

Burning Love," which was released as a single just a few months after these concerts and would become Elvis' biggest hit since "Suspicious Minds" in 1969, isn't heard on the Hampton Roads or Richmond Coliseum shows but vigorous renditions appear on the Greensboro Coliseum and San Antonio Convention Center sets.

They preferred the atmosphere of the tour compared to Presley's Las Vegas performances, as the critic noted that Presley appeared "assured, relaxed". The photos, most of which come from the MGM archive, all look fairly familiar although some neat shots from San Antonio (pg6 +25) and Jacksonville (both fold-out cover pics) do appear to be new to my collection. The ‘oldies but goodies’ are fairly standard crowd-pleasing performances, however the inclusion of ‘Are You Lonesome Tonight’ is a delightful addition.

Elvis has a wonderful relationship with each audience and puts his heart and soul into every performance. EIN's in-depth review by Piers Beagley checks out the positives and negatives of this long-awaited release. Similarly the ‘Burning Love’ rehearsal on the second day with Elvis explaining the “Hunka, hunka” ending to the band is so cool.
