And lastly Joe. How much this story revolved around her just blew, BLEW my mind away. How much I respected her as Katie quietly read her letter... I don't believe I've felt that for a character before. Joe, Christy, Alex's first wife or whoever you want to call is someone I want to grow up and become like. I want to be selfless and love my husband and children that much that I would do anything and everything for their happiness. This story is perfect. So many messages were brought across from it. So many important morals. It just seems like every male character and every female in all of his books are really just the same people only with different names and occupations. And they are all so boring. Just once i would like a Sparks character to say f*** or talk about their periods, or not like kids and have it not be because they are the villain. Having said that, I had the pleasure of talking with a 96 year old lady at the hospital the other day and she had this book sitting on her bedside table and told me she likes N Sparks' novels "because they aren't too racy for me" which I thought was adorable so hats off to Mr Sparks for providing a good read for people of a certain age and disposition. Lucy, Alex, Mike, and Jules are each embroiled in the act of trying to survive the zombies. They have friends they are trying to save as well. The odds are terrible. The horrific virus is relentless and seemingly impossible to escape from. The effort of trying to survive is so exhausting. Sometimes it easier to think about just letting it take you.

Holden, Stephen. "Her Date Is a Single Dad; His, a Possible Killer", " New York Times", 13 February 2013. Retrieved on 29 November 2014. For the sake of their younger sister and brother, they have to travel. Their journey is going to be filled with danger and too many unknowns. If they don’t travel far north, they will certainly die. They need to travel to find a safe haven.Richard Roeper called the film "Bat. Bleep. Crazy." and asks if the filmmakers or a key character is out of her mind. Roeper expresses disbelief at the twist ending, and "how insane the whole thing is". Aside from the twist ending he would have given the film 2.5 stars, but ultimately gives it only 1.5 out of four stars. [15] Peter Bradshaw, writing for The Guardian, called Safe Haven's setting "a sugary vision of small-town America that does not correspond with the real world at any point." [16] Peter Travers of Rolling Stone gave the film zero stars out of four, and concluded his review by stating: "I hate Safe Haven. It's a terrible thing to do to your Valentine." [17] Accolades [ edit ] Sparks is a mediocre writer at best. His plots might have a seed of promise, but the writing reads like someone who is taking their first creative writing class. Or maybe he's channeling an average writer from the past. His style is flowery yet stilted. All the characters talk the same. The movies made from his novels are much better than the books, so that pretty much says it all. Predictable, but I could handle that. Then Nicholas Sparks couldn't resist taking it to the hokey and totally unbelievable level by making it so Katie's neighbor was really a magical spirit. She was Alex's wife who loved him so much she wanted him to be happy with another wife who would also love her children. Lucy Blair, an American doctor, is trying to help patients. Delivering babies, broken bones, and occasionally the normal illness like maybe, hopefully, just a simple cold. Oh my gosh! This book. Not many books actually make me cry real tears but, oh man, the ending of this one got me!!

For some weird reason, everyone keeps looking to her for advice. She’s no expert. She doesn’t want the responsibility. Every day is a new fight for survival. A new nightmare. More danger. Finding a safe haven is a dream. Complete list of Teen Choice 2013 Awards winners". Los Angeles Times. August 11, 2013 . Retrieved June 10, 2015. I very much enjoyed the book and the movie, but I think what I love best about the book was Jo and how that whole character was. Kevin is another story. That man has serious demons that have driven his mind to insanity. Legit psycho!!! He is that villain that you hate with a passion and seeing inside his head was the most disturbing thing ever! I mean for someone who quotes the bible a lot, the world he lived in was just wrong in every single aspect.Safe Haven is a fantasy romantic novel by American novelist Nicholas Sparks. It was published in 2010. According to WorldCat, the book is held in 2242 libraries. [1] Plot [ edit ] When Katie first meets Jo, we can sense a striking similarity between their personalities, which helps them connect instantly. As the film progresses, we do not learn any valuable information about Jo’s past. This makes us wonder if, just like Katie, even Jo has a past she is running away from in search of a fresh start. The ending of the film proves this to be somewhat true. I admit there are parts that drag, like when they're talking endlessly at the beach or when Katie is recounting her day with Jo. I mean Jo might not know what Alex and Katie and the kids did but we do. Also the characters are far too mature and serious for me to relate to. Alex worries about kids and parenting. And Katie- she's disciplined enough to look only for items on sale while shopping! But I like them both individually and as a couple, which is why I was almost bored as they took and took and took their time to fall in love on the first part of the book. Safe haven is a great story with a thrilling plot. It is both a romantic story and a thriller. If you are not a Sparks’ fan You will become one after reading this.

It's undoubtly Nicholas Sparks'. I'd know even if I hadn't heard about the book and found it with covers ripped off and title and author's name missing. Wow. So, I guess I have some issues. Anyway, I vow that this really really was my last Sparks novel. This time I mean it! Erin flees her abusive alcoholic husband, Kevin, takes on a different identity and changes her name to Katie. She arrives in Southport, North Carolina. Finding work at a seafood restaurant, she becomes friends with her neighbor, Jo, and gets to know the town's general store owner, Alex. Illustrated with colour photography and route maps throughout, it will make you see this beautiful city in a new way.Domestic violence is a large theme in this novel. The main character Katie represents the individuals out there involved in dreadful and horrific relationships. The film begins with Erin hurriedly leaving her house in Boston. After briefly staying with her neighbor, she goes to a bus station and boards a bus heading to southern America. On the road, she gets down at the small town of Southport, North Carolina. She decides to stay in Southport and adopts the name of Katie. Katie gets a job at a local diner as a waitress and rents a small cabin by the woods. Opening line: “As Katie wound her way among the tables, a breeze from the Atlantic rippled through her hair." That is so because in addition to a head for numbers, the author is a storyteller. He explains his investment philosophy through the brilliant mathematical minds of the Bernoullis, through Nietzche, Albert Einstein, the SS Eastland is used to showcase the frequently cruel results of good intentions, his Burmese Water Dog is featured as a way of vivifying the simplistic nature of correlations, etc. etc. Though Safe Haven is full of charts and numbers, it reads as though it’s written by a poet. The author has a very interesting mind.

Katie is working hard as a waitress at Ivan’s cafe, in coastal Southport, NC, and living in a run-down, low-rent house. She seems very remote and detached from the other residents, though Alex Wheatley and his two young children, Josh and Kristen take a keen interest. As their friendship grows, Alex and the kids arrange to present the penniless Katie with a bicycle, so she can ride places. She discloses to her neighbour Jo that she has been the victim of domestic violence, and is in fear of being discovered.

Katie is interested in Alex, who is a widower with two children. Alex and Katie's relationship becomes romantic, encouraged by Jo. Alex's former job had trained him to recognize signs of an abuse victim. Katie reveals her past to Alex, who wants to know why she did not go seek help from the police. She explains that Kevin is a police detective. She fled from his abuse because she knew he would kill her if he located her. Her created identity is based on a neighbor's dead daughter who resembled her. Jo later tells Katie that she will be leaving Southport soon. Katie thanks her for being a good friend and Jo tells her, "You deserve this, Katie. You belong here."
