We follow him on an adventure as he tries to discover the source of a strange application that is downloaded onto his phone. I have even talked the head into a little revamp of the library so that we can display them properly! Even the title of the book brought a smile to my face with it play on an existing scientific concept. Packed with astrophysics, emotion and invention on a galactic scale, this is science fiction at its most moving and exciting. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

On a personal note, I found this book easy to read with ups and downs relatable to many children of today. There are details of the training to be an astroanut, life in space, the Fibonacci sequence, and the Goldilocks zone.

The storyline gave us the opportunity to produce some wonderful and inspiring Literacy work, and I would recommend this book to any upper KS2 teacher. It is helpful to have a book that can be used in class alongside a space topic and there is some solid 'space' content. When your dad's lost in space and his only hope is you and a bunch of aliens, it's going to be a bumpy ride.

Jamie decides to explore the abandoned observatory which his dad used to visit and there he finds a lot more than just a telescope. It is a story that the class would probably enjoy but the really switched on scientists might draw the line at Buzz and his light swarming and class this as fantasy rather than science fiction, but does this matter? I liked how it had the science behind the book at the end (the infinite lives of Maisie day also had that, which is the other book I've read by edge).Shortlisted for the North Somerset Teachers’ Book Award, the Haringey Children’s Book Award and the Bolton Children’s Fiction Award. To coincide with his dad's mission, Jamie's school is having a Space week and kids are designing aliens and making costumes to dress up in.
