On the nose: truth be told, based on the color, I initially assumed a bourbon cask, but on the first few whiffs, I'm getting raisins, sun rype bar/fruit roll up, bit of chocolate fudge which tells me that there's a fairly vibrant sherry cask at work here.... bit more time gives me some apple notes and a slight bit of biscuitiness that would hint at some bourbon cask too.... just my guess anyways. Either way, very pleasant and enjoyable nose. great start Kristin – The Craigellachie 17 sweet, and has a complex aroma. I expect the taste to be sweet, and it threw me for a loop. I like the taste but it doesn’t match the smell.In any case, the 31 year old was truly spectacular stuff. I couldn’t in my giddiest of daydreams envisage a scenario in which I could buy a bottle, but I’ve had a chance to taste it a couple of times, and it really is something special. My personal favourite whisky of the year, in fact, up until a month or so ago. pts.), 17yo (84), 19yo (86), 23yo (89), 23yo Exceptional Cask bot. 2017 @ 46% (87), 19yo Exceptional Cask #128 55,4% (91) and 21yo Exceptional Cask #5009 @ 55,7% (90). The village of Craigellachie was an important hub in whisky’s history as it was here, in 1863, that the railway lines from Lossiemouth (north), Dufftown (south), Keith (east), and the Strathspey Railway (south west) met, allowing rail transport between Glasgow, Edinburgh and Perth within the region. This was a generous sample given to me by a very good friend; I decided to pop it open on a beautiful spring day, and boy does it fit for the occasion.. a surprising characteristic of most good whiskies ;)

Designed by Charles Doig, it was built with all modern conveniences with the express intention of making a lighter fruitier character than the older distilleries – one of the earliest descriptors of Craigellachie mentions pineapple as a desireable aroma.As one of mine and my wife’s favourite whiskies, and whisky ranges, I was always going to be excited about reviewing the full range of products, as well as visiting the distillery (although the write up of that will come in a few weeks once I’ve been…).

ReplyThis warming dram starts with a nose of oily fruits and peppery spices. Deep dark fruits, heavy sherry influence and dominance. The palette allows the flavours to be fully explored. Sweet pineapple and a nutty spice come through, alongside sweet hazelnuts and oak wood. Oh hi. The nose is bonkers; meatier than the 23, a carnivore’s dream, with alluring sulphur notes, exotic notes of pineapple juices, wafts of vanilla and dreamy buttermilk with tonnes of spices rounded with a multi-layered herbaceous character I could not help but spend a lot of time with. The thing that annoys me about the price of Craigellachie is how do they justify the prices they charge? There is the slightest hint of spice, a delicate cinnamon note that serves to blow up those mouth watering sugary overtones; a symphony of flavour, with all the crucial notes coming together in perfect harmony. The linger of the finish doesn’t last too long, but just enough to taste that caramel again and the slightest hint of lemon and lime citrus notes. Our penultimate stop on the Craigellachie malt tour is the 23 Year Old. A little of smoke and malty. After 5 mins the melon and floral flavor come out (I can imagine this aroma is given by the aromatic compound called Beta Damascone). Whiskybase B.V. Feels more mature and rounded on the tongue than then 13yo. Weightier too. I really like these subtle mature oak touches. There is a bit of booziness to it, but just a few drops of water dispel that if necessary. There is a wisp of peat smoke here as well. I get a drying feeling in my gums when I keep it in my mouth for a while. The mouthfeel is not oily; much more astringent than I expected! Spicy, oaky, watered down apple flavours, charred barrel, iodine with a hint of minerals. Peppery, apple, and more apple, creamed honey. Medium-long finish. Craigellachie gave me one of the best whisky moments of my life this year (on the beach next to the distillery as it happens, if you’ll forgive me being a bit smug). At its best it is certainly capable of whisky as good as any made anywhere else. So perhaps I’ve simply come to hold them to a ridiculous standard. A seemingly endless thirst for whisky, combined with love/hate relationships between producers of malt whisky on the one hand and big grain whisky factories on the other, pushed all involved in the industry to crank up production. On top of that, the Speyside region was reaping the fruits of welcoming in the railroad system, meaning that, all of a sudden, transport of goods both in and out became much, much, easier. It’s little wonder that around 1890–1900, we see a plethora of new distilleries popping up mainly, but not exclusively, in Speyside.
