Here are two 100% crops which have been Saved as Web - Quality 50 in Photoshop. The right-hand image has had some sharpening applied in Photoshop. The out-of-the camera images are just a little soft at the default sharpening setting. You can change the in-camera sharpening level if you don't like the default look. The actual settings on offer vary according to the shooting mode, but in Program it lets you adjust the metering, My Colours options, White Balance, Sensitivity, Record Mode (see section below), Drive Mode, Image resolution and Image compression.

Pressing the latter button brings up two folders on-screen - the first containing the shooting menu, the second the more general purpose set-up menu. The first folder offers ability to activate the digital zoom, call up grid lines or a 3:2 format ratio guide on screen, activate i-Contrast, image stabilisation modes (continuous, shoot only, active when panning, or off), plus face and blink detection. The second available folder contains the set up menu, offering the ability to tweak various sound and start up options - unlike previous generations of Digital IXUS, there's not a rather unnecessary separate menu folder for doing this - plus format the memory card in use. The more experienced user can also turn off the aforementioned 'hints and tips' speech bubbles if they prove too much as well as manually adjust the LCD brightness or reset all settings. Along the same lines, this is most definitely a point and shoot camera, rather than one for the enthusiasts. Nevertheless, it produces more than acceptable results and is diverse enough for most everyday social photography. Indeed serves to show just how far phone cameras have to come before they’re truly a viable alternative.Canon Digital IXUS 110 IS Digital Compact Camera". Canon Europe. Archived from the original on 25 February 2009 . Retrieved 7 April 2010. The Canon Digital IXUS 130 produces images of above average quality. The biggest issue is noise and loss of detail at relatively slow ISO speeds. The 1/2.3 inch, 14 megapixel sensor recorded noise-free images at ISO 80 and 100, but there's already some noise and slight colour desaturation at ISO 200. ISO 400 shows more noise and loss of colour, and ISO 800 and 1600 are even worse, with obvious loss of fine detail and further colour desaturation.

Here are some general test shots taken with the IXUS 130 to give an idea of performance ability when it comes to image quality, dynamic range, colour rendition and the focal range of the respective optics.”’ On a rather dull day we chose the Vivid setting from amongst the Canon’s ‘My Colors’ menu to help this post box leap out of frame. Having said that, the boost in saturation provided is quite subtle. It’s quite a fun camera to use, too, with no awkward mode dials or complex controls. There’s a mode switch, allowing you to move between the Auto, Program and Video modes, and a four-way dial for controlling focus, exposure compensation, the flash and self-timer. There are additional controls available via the ‘Func Set’ button in the centre of the four-way dial, but these are limited to just image size and compression when the camera’s in its auto mode. We have an example video here shot handheld in the best-quality HD mode, showing the digital zoom towards the end of the clip; stabilisation was enabled.Canon Digital IXUS 870 IS Digital Compact Camera". Canon Europe. Archived from the original on 2 January 2010 . Retrieved 7 April 2010. While the IXUS 130 / SD1400 IS is dismal at continuous shooting though, it is rather good at self-timer photos. Beyond the usual two and ten second countdowns along with a custom option which fires-off between one and ten shots after a delay of 0 to 30 seconds, the IXUS 130 / SD1400 IS offers Smile, Wink and Face timers, which delay the countdown until they see the subject either smile or wink or until a new face enters the frame. Ultimately though, the IXUS 130 / SD1400 IS’s stabilisation makes handholding a viable proposition even at relatively slow shutter speeds, although remember like all stabilisation systems it’ll only iron-out wobbles, not freeze a subject in motion. In common with competitors the camera offers its own take on intelligent auto functionality as originally pioneered on Panasonic's Lumix compact range. Here it's named Smart Auto mode with Scene Detection technology, enabling users to simply point and shoot, the camera recognizing scenes and subjects from 22 different options, then adjusting its parameters accordingly so all the photographer has to do is fully depress the shutter release button to go on and take the shot. Further hand-holding features include face detection, auto red eye removal, blink detection - flagging up the fact that your subject has their eyes closed so you can take a replacement shot at the time - and the new Smart Shutter mode. This lets you take a picture simply by either winking or smiling at the camera, or when another person enters the frame. There are also useful 'hints and tips' prompts within the provided on-screen menus.

Finally, the Date Stamp option allows the time, date or both to be permanently written in the corner of the image. Such digital mutilation may horrify many photographers, especially considering the date and time are always present in the EXIF data of the file itself, but we’ve heard from sufficient numbers of people who want the feature to know it’s something of value.
