Description

I only recommend this tree pruner for occasional usage on branches up to 4m (13ft) above ground level. We have added the hedge trimming head now too, might get the brush cutter when or if the current one dies.

With this lopper you can certainly reach high branches (up to about 6 metres/20ft) without using a ladder, which saves time and reduces the danger of using a ladder when pruning trees. We’ve only used it to trim a few things so far, lovely smooth action and good quality piece of equipment. He previously worked as a project manager and has experience in managing teams of tradespeople and landscape gardeners on both small and medium sized projects. The extended reach makes it very suitable for cutting up to 4 metres and the pole is not too heavy or unwieldy to use. Extending and collapsing the pole couldn’t be easier; I just opened the lever, slid the inner pole to the desired length and then closed the lever. plus the user’s reach, this tool will prune off branches at a decent height, considering it has a chainsaw at the end. Daniel has over 18 years of experience in construction, home improvement and landscaping and is the lead consultant at DIY Gardening. and the average user will only be able to reach around 4m (13ft), which might not suit every garden.

These tools make light work of tall tasks and you won’t have to go anywhere near a ladder or risk a fall. Comfort is also a key feature of this pruner, with durable soft-grip handles and a non-slip base ensuring optimal comfort and reduced fatigue during use. The irritating problem of regular entanglement and associated wrestling and wrenching of the rope that many extending pruners employ is bypassed (oops, pun) by the clever internal webbing strap and bike chain (didn't expect to see that!Daniel has experience of using the cheap Spear and Jackson “classic” pruner from several years ago and wanted to compare it to a modern pruner. I’ve used loppers before where the rope has got tangled or frayed and the mechanism dusty and dirty; this won’t happen with this tool. A few years ago I made a pruning saw up out of four alloy poles that pushed together with a blade attached. The pruner also includes an orange cutting support for added visibility, enhancing your accuracy and safety while working. Draper is a well-known budget tool manufacturer, and I’ve tested many of their products over the years.

I’ve used the Gardena Starcut 410 Plus lopper to cut many hundreds of branches on trees and tall shrubs in 2022, and overall, I’m delighted with the tool’s performance. We tested the best cordless strimmers on sale in the UK and discovered what’s great and not-so-great about them. Arsenal includes: Stihl FS550 clearing saw, Stihl HS81 Hedge Cutter, Stihl leaf blower/vacuum, Stihl MS441CM chain saw, Stihl MS230 chain saw and obviously the pole saw. Some of the willows had branches over 12 inches in diameter (and were very rotten ) but you can cut from behind and out of harms way.

Not into Taking pictures of tools but it was one of the few on my ipad which my daughter had taken doing a bit of reportage! The gearing ratio is 12x, meaning only slight effort is enough to cut through tough stems up to 32mm (1.

If you have lots of high branches to prune off, you’ll be better off paying a bit more and choosing a more robust tool, ideally with a gearing system, so you don’t need to use brute force to cut through the branches. Having used this tool briefly at a demonstration in a garden centre, I feel the build quality isn’t quite as good as the Gardena Starcut 410 and I didn’t like the exposed mechanism but the reviews and ratings online are comparable and it’s worth considering if you’re on a budget. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. I initially bought it for pruning overhanging branches but have ended up pollarding numerous large neglected willows and for felling many other trees.

Introducing the Fiskars FSK1023624 PowerGear Telescopic Tree Pruner UPX86, a versatile tool that is perfect for both trade professionals and DIY enthusiasts. This suits my requirements perfectly, and although somewhat more expensive than other makes it is well made and cuts branches very easily. The one redeeming feature of this tool is the saw attachment which is great for cutting through thick branches, although expect to get tired and sore arms, I certainly did. You will be nackered after an hour, two at the most, but that's with a saw blade on the end, we find it the fastest for pruning.
