Description

It’s the thing that’s always made Gunship felt like such a sterile product, an act built on the presence of references than any greater application of them. The songs are great and varied but all with that GUNSHIP vibe, which blends so well with this album.

The review consistently leans towards negative commentary, and the language used suggests a level of personal frustration or disappointment with the album. It doesn’t matter how airtight your stylistic recreations are, or how many big-name guests you can bring onboard; without the songs to keep it all steady, you’re just going to sink.Early in their career GUNSHIP very understandably did this, but on this album they are embracing the future in a way that they haven’t before. There’s also contributions from legendary drummer Dave Lombardo and Tyler Bates, in a star-studded opener to the album that’s anthemic and easy dancefloor fodder.

Of course, there’s plenty of saxophone; it’s more prominent in some songs than others, especially the aforementioned ‘Empress of the Damned’ and late album sleeper hit ‘Nuclear Date Night’ where alongside a bluesy solo, there’s some downright stunning hooks that’ll leave grins plastered across faces in jazzy ecstasy. That album came out five years ago now, and the single prevailing memory of Gunship is their slavish desire to ‘80s synthwave, in a way that subsumed anything approaching a cogent idea or identity in favour of laying that devotion bare. As with all Gunship's albums on the first listen it's rather nice, then before you know it you are playing it constantly as it's bloody excellent! Da ich bisher jedes Album auf irgendeinem Medium zuhause hab (neben den Dauerplaylist in den Streamingdiensten), war hier diesmal die Vinylvariante dran.It features Wargasm ’s Milkie Way, who trades vocal lines with Alex Westaway throughout to electrifying effect. Named after the international icon of fantasy and imagination, UNICORN is emblazoned with the tagline "Imagination Is A Weapon". While critical reviews are a common part of music journalism, a more balanced and objective approach would provide a fairer assessment for readers.

Weaponized Love” feels like their love letter to Nine Inch Nails with its lusty lyrics and beats and “Holographic Heart” – which features Britta Phillips – is pure Madonna worship in the best way. I think Technoir 2 was ruined by the chorus from the second singer and many of the other tunes are just too much bubble gum for me. I mean, there isn't much else to say - if you liked some of the songs on their first two albums, then you'll definitely like some of the tracks on this one. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. And thus, it’s telling how much backup on Unicorn comes from those established names in ‘80s—or ‘80s-replicating—synthwave work.Granted, there’s not a ton that comes from that, seeing as most don’t get to show much of themselves off, instead falling into Gunship’s maw to be spat out as a nominal vocaloid fit for purpose.
