De Leon says he allowed her a lot of freedom with the character, including making her a single woman with no children, but that she kept a full journal about Abigail’s life that was solely for her own development. On VOD, it ranked number 2 on iTunes Movies following the Oscar nomination announcements on January 24, 2023. [22] By March 9, 2023, according to Samba TV, it had been streamed on Hulu in 250,000 households in the United States since the announcements, with JustWatch also reporting it to be, by February 21, the second most-streamed Best Picture nominee in Canada, behind The Fabelmans. [23] [24] This is a prime example of a movie that has clear ambitions yet misses the mark spectacularly. The best word that can describe Triangle of Sadness is "snooty." From director Ruben Ostlund, it's a movie that thinks it has something new and important to say, when everything in it has already been said. It is also technically a dark comedy, but it's as funny as having nothing to do on an island. The only thing remotely funny in this movie was the scene with the hand grenade. That makes sense in context. It has a weird way of alternating between being ridiculously over the top and annoyingly ambiguous. The famed sinking scene where people vomit is the worst example of the former. Nobody needs to see a naked old man having diarrhea and vomiting on screen at the same time. It hits you over the head with its messages, and leaves the actual movie in the margins. The worst part is the ending, which doubles down on this. It's completely open-ended, without any hint of resolution.Triangle of Sadness' Review: Satire at Sea". Wall Street Journal. 6 October 2022. Archived from the original on 29 June 2023 . The photography needs special mentioning, because it was like a fly on the wall. Subtle, but suggestive. Mysterious and mesmirizing. I was drawn in like rarely happens. I was mesmirized! Archived from the original on 4 June 2021 . Retrieved 5 February 2021. Why did you want to film on the Christina O yacht specifically, which was once owned by Aristotle Onassis? Triangle of Sadness earned an enormous amount of talk on the 2022 film festival circuit. Ruben Östlund created a relentless satire about the rich and beautiful, but its plot left audiences with one huge question: What happened to Yaya in the Triangle of Sadness ending? One of the actors had a very confident response during a press conference at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival that gave a definitive answer to the question. You have probably never seen a movie like this one. Its craziness is simply undeniable, juggling the grotesque to perfection to paint an unflattering picture of the highest social castes. But while one could be reluctant to see yet another moralizing movie where "the rich are the bad ones and the poor are the good ones", Triangle of Sadness succeeds in going further. Indeed, every protagonist can be made fun of as, through the movie, they all reveal their flaws and their greed.

Triangle of Sadness (or Sans Filtre) is most likely the best film Ruben Östlund has ever made. I say "most likely" because I'm actually a bit behind on this director, having only seen The Square when I was analyzing its screenplay for my degree project in 2019, ergo I couldn't take in its twisted satire or defiant imagery the way I would've liked. All the Boxing Day movies reviewed: Which films should you watch?". Retrieved 28 May 2022.The final shot of the film also invites much speculation. Where is our hero running? We can tell -- through basic cinematic language, as my companion pointed out -- that he must be pursuing the characters we saw leave earlier (he's running from the left side of the screen to the right, just as we see the others do throughout their hike) but what has happened? Does he know what the others discovered? Did that one character do what she appeared to be doing to the other character once they reached their goal, and if so, is our hero running because he fears the worst or because he was in on the plot? Or can it be so simple that he has been alerted of the salvation that awaits? Five Films Nominated for European University Film Award (EUFA)" (Press release). European Film Academy. 7 October 2022. Archived from the original on 12 December 2022 . Retrieved 12 December 2022. One of the most ambiguous elements of the ending of Triangle of Sadness is the mixed emotions it leaves viewers with — especially when it comes to Dolly De Leon's Abigail. On the surface, Abigail is the antagonist of Triangle of Sadness. It's her manipulation that causes many of the distressing events to unfold once she and the passengers are marooned on the island, after all. However, Triangle of Sadness is a complex movie, and Abigail's motives make her actions much more sympathetic, to the point that it's incredibly difficult to view her as a true villain despite what she does.
