The main thing? Keep in mind bouillon is quite salty and very concentrated. I mention in the recipe I've been using 1 teaspoon per 1 cup of water/liquid to start. You can adjust from there based on what you're making and personal preference. And as far as variations go, this first batch was made primarily with ingredients from my refrigerator, but I'm really excited to try other versions using different herbs and ratios of the base ingredients. In fact, if you have any suggestions or ideas give a shout in the comments - I'd love to hear them! More Bouillon Variations Consuming high amounts of sodium may increase water retention and blood pressure levels, especially in those who are more sensitive to the effects of salt ( 2).

SEMOIS TROUT: If you’re a fish-eater, don’t miss the trout fish found in abundance in the Semois river. Regardless of the type you choose, whether you prefer cubes, powder, or the popular “Better than bouillon”, you should know they are all fairly high in sodium. This can be a benefit, but could also cause some side effects. L’OEILLET DU CHÂTEAU: If you have already done the Castle tour, you might have spotted the cheese in the cellars! That’s the hard cheese made from unpasteurised goat’s milk! I recommend placing them in a container with space in-between each cube, layered up with pieces of parchment paper between each layer (so the cubes aren’t touching). There are four main elements to homemade vegetable bouillon cubes: vegetables, aromatics (seasonings), fat, and salt.

What to try in Bouillon

The tastiest way to get extra fluid and salt is with bouillon. Just dissolve a bouillon cube in hot water. Usually half a cube is enough for a cup. Bouillon is not connected by train. The only way to reach Bouillon depending on public transport is by taking a bus (LeTEC route 8) from Libramont. Libramont is connected to Brussels by direct train and the journey takes about 2 hours. Including the bus journey, connection time, it effectively takes about 3 hours to reach Bouillon from Brussels by public transport. Where to stay in Bouillon As far as autophagy goes, there are no studies that can give a definitive answer. Some say it is ok, others advise against it during the fast. If autophagy is your goal, you may want to avoid drinking bouillon while fasting. You can instead use it during your eating window or even break the fast with it. If you’re doing it for weight loss, blood sugar, insulin management, or metabolic health in general, several types of bouillon could be ok, depending on your chosen fasting method. Most bouillon cubes and powders contain up to 5 calories per serving, which usually come from carbs. Many fasting methods will allow this number during your fast, though some are stricter and limit you to only 1-2 calories. In that case, you can simply use less bouillon or drink only about half of it or less to stay within the allowed number of calories.

Those who are only looking at the insulin response will find it difficult to get a proper answer as there are no studies on how bouillon affects insulin production. Looking at the composition, we know the calories come from carbs and the cubes and powders usually contain preservatives and other ingredients that might cause an insulin response. Intermittent fasting is a great diet for both weight loss and overall health. But let’s face it. Living on water, unsweetened coffee, and tea during your fast can get pretty dull. Adding more taste may seem like a good idea, but how does that affect fasting? Does bouillon break a fast? BOUILLON BUDGET HOTELS: If you’re on a budget, the best option to stay in Bouillon is of course the Youth Hostel.Du fik som sagt her min nemme opskrift på hjemmelavet bouillon, hvor du ved, hvad bouillonen er lavet af. Since most fasts advise staying under 5 calories during your fasting window, one serving of “Better than bouillon” is a no. Does that mean you should avoid drinking bouillon made with “Better than bouillon” altogether during your fast? Yes and no. If you’re fasting for gut rest, yes, you should avoid it. But if you’re like most people and are interested in weight loss, you may be able to have a very small serving. Bouillon can also help curb your appetite during a long fast. It may help decrease your risk of overeating, though this depends a lot on the other ingredients it has on top of sodium. DAY TRIP TO BOUILLON: Chateau de Bouillon, Archeoscope Bouillon, Bouillon-Abbaye de Cordemoy hike or bike till Tombeau du Géant. If time permits, walk around the historic centre of Bouillon. One of the top places to visit near Bouillon is ofcourse the Tombeau du Géant (Giant’s Tomb) at Botassart. It is located 10km from Bouillon and easily reachable by bike. Being in Ardennes hills, the roads have moderate or steep slopes. So, if you’re not really up to it, a good idea would be to hire an e-bike.

Remember though, you can achieve the same benefits with things like homemade vegetable broth or electrolyte drinks, which have fewer questionable ingredients and are overall healthier. Some people avoid MSG due to concerns about its long-term health effects. However, these claims aren’t supported by evidence, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers MSG safe for consumption ( 5). Another interesting trail is the Bouillon – Abbaye de Cordemoy hike. Unlike the other 2, this isn’t waymarked. This is a 6.5km trail, starting at Pont de Cordemois. The Abbey of Our Lady of Clairefontaine (L'abbaye Notre-Dame de Clairefontaine) itself isn’t accessible to public though. In a large skillet, add the oil and heat it over medium heat. Once hot, add the onion and lightly saute for a couple of minutes. Then add the potatoes and cook for several minutes to begin softening (4-5 minutes). The salt content: bouillon is meant to be fairly salty as it’s a concentrated flavor adder to dishes. However, feel free to adapt the amount you use based on personal preference.

Next, add the salt and stir well. This will encourage all the excess liquid to release from the veggies. Cook for a further 15-20 minutes, uncovered, stirring occasionally. Step 4: Blend the vegetable bouillon Salt: it might seem like you’re adding a lot. However, it’s important for preservation, though you can adjust the amount to personal preference. In all the other cases, the same logic applies. You should stay away from these cubes if you’re fasting for gut rest. And if you are interested in autophagy or insulin management, you’re probably safer stay away from all types of bouillon, as there are no studies to show the effects it has.
