I found myself sitting up in bed until the early hours of the morning captivated by various sections. I usually hate books about movies because they're (more often than not) mired in soul-deadening theory that sucks the joy out of the movie only to leave it a lifeless husk of conceptual jibber jabber. These high school hellraisers started their run at The Other Palace on 21st February, and with the recent announcement that the cult show has been extended (again! This combination of hardiness and beauty, along with relative ease of cultivation and care, makes heathers a wonderfully versatile feature in any garden. Funny, insightful, irreverent, and nostalgia-inducing, this book makes me simultaneously wish for the "good old days" and reminds me why they weren't that good.

Due to COVID restrictions, travelling to the UK to see Heathers in the flesh is not the best option, so instead I chose to read the script. It brought back all the memories of being in that theatre and watching it live – I wish I could go back and do it again! I think I've read too much media literature (the exact kind that John Ross Bowie describes as "freshman soc major") to look at this through a clear lens. The musical was praised for staying true to the film while still having its own original additions to the storyline. The film stars Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, Shannen Doherty, Lisanne Falk, Kim Walker, and Penelope Milford. I’ve not watched the film yet, but if you’ve seen the film I’ve heard that the musical is quite different.Seeing as I am complete musical theatre trash, I of course knew the soundtrack by heart, but it was really fun to be able to read the scenes in between all of the songs to get the full effect of the show. John Ross Bowie actually seems like a decent guy, unlike most film theorists who are the biggest assholes in history. I absolutely adore the songs, and I really like the original film, but I think I had the impression going in that the story would be largely the same, just with the songs adding some more emotional depth. Heathers the Musical had its London premiere at the same theatre in 2018 before transferring to the West End’s Theatre Royal Haymarket.
