Is the future of the beleaguered Chapter more important than the hate of the foe that provides their honour?

I don't know much about Salamanders and I couldn't connect with this tale because I didn't understand that much about them. Better than that Soul Drinkers nonsense, but not as good as the Ultramarines series, or Brothers of the Snake. There are some stories about loyalist marines slicing their way through hordes of xenos and so on, but quite a few stories are about Chaos marines, initiates etc. As with all anthologies some of the stories in this book are much better than others, and everyone will have different ideas about which are which.My only gripe is similar to those in other reviews of this book: Traitorous Chaos Marines are not heroes! Not too much to say, just some very fun action involving some rather brutal Black Templars and their friends in the Sisters. Honour among Fiends' by Dylan Owen is the fourth story of the collection and is easily one of the best in the book. It potentially highlights the sameness of the series but there are enough differences to intrigue different people.

I do like that the main character is one of the potential recruits and the conflict within the Night Lords force is also nicely done.

It features a prequel story to the Salamanders Series by Nick Kyme, a tie-in to the new Imperial Fists series by Chris Robertson, and new Deathwatch and Night Lords stories, and more.This book is a collection of various short stories related to the Warhammer 40k universe and for me a good entry into this universe. Ich muss allerdings gestehen, dass mich HEROES OF THE SPACE MARINES dennoch nicht direkt umgehauen hat – so einen richtigen Hammer habe ich unter den Stories nicht gefunden, und mitunter wirkte bei der Lektüre Vieles ziemlich vorhersehbar… und eben nicht ganz auf Augenhöhe mit den Highlights aus dem großen Fundus der in den letzten 30 Jahren erschienenen WH40K-Erzählungen.

Amidst heavy casualties and combat unceasing, a number of Space Marines of the Avenging Sons chapter — currently on "penitence patrol" due to previous dishonourable actions - grow disillusioned with their role in the quelling of a global uprising and decide upon a most rebellious course. I believe the 8 I mentioned are good enough for even non-40k fans to read; pulpy, war-torn sci-fi reading! It's funny reading work by someone I know: I could imagine him penning this between Berlitz lessons or after his usual Herculean training sessions, Tokyo's summer heat bursting from his shaven pate in thick runnels of sweat.Outside of that story, none of the others really stuck out in my mind and that story is really the reason for my rating. This is a nice story that introduces the renegade Chaos God Malice (who veteran gamers may recognise as Malal). It starts off as your average spess mahreen fluff but as the situation grows dire the space marines slowly crack under pressure and do some heinous things.
