This compelling book is a useful addition to the canon, showing both the violence and inhumanity of the trade and the heartening role of those who stood against it. If you have not glued them in place yet I suggest you cut the camber before assembly as it will be much easier than trying to do so after they are glued up. As evidenced by the recorded frustrations of West African Squadron Commodore Sir Francis Augustus Collier in various letters, it surely felt like they were being either ignored or actively fought against by the government in carrying out their assigned mission. Rooks does a great job of giving the reader the necessary background information to understand the difficulties faced by the Black Joke and its squadron, including quite a bit of background on international relations among the European and South American powers and the treaties that were in place. This was a fact that I had to memorize in high school, but I had never stopped to think about how that actually worked. champion with completed degrees in theater, law, and library and information science, currently at work on a PhD in human sexuality that incorporates aspects of the legal history of sex in the United States. A worthwhile lesson for any lover of British Naval history, but probably one of the most important little ships in the history of the British Navy because of its most holy mission. Presidente was lost at sea on her way to Sierra Leone, but Black Joke earned salvage money for Hosse.
