The other way of looking at the issue of choice is the oven’s purpose. You have seen some that are designed specifically for pizzas. But perhaps something of a general purpose would be more useful. Many solar ovens work well in the range of 150 to 200ºF but have difficulty climbing much higher. While some users are able to cook impressive dishes using solar ovens, these are usually best for heating foods that have been pre-cooked and simply require re-heating. We’re discussing camping ovens here and a big part of their appeal is general portability. The easier it is to bring it when you’re going camping, the better the oven. Both portable ovens have convenient carry handles, so we’re off to a good start. Another thing to consider here is that the Camp Chef oven also gives you those two convenient burners to use at the same time as the oven. You can’t do that with the Coleman since you have to place the oven on top of the burners just to get it to work. So, with the Camp Chef oven, you can cook four different things at the same time. And it’s not meant to be used with outdoorgrills or open fire, so keep that in mind. It might weigh 25lbs less than the Camp Chef oven, but that doesn’t account for the weight of the other stove or burner you would also have to bring on the camping trip.

Now, let’s talk about the power of the Camp Chef oven a bit. It has 7,500 BTUs per burner, while the oven has 3,000 BTUs. The power of burners is equal to that of your household stovetop, which is awesome. But the oven is not nearly as powerful, which means that cooking in it takes longer. Regarding functionality, you have ovens that can be described as general-purpose types, and the other group designed especially for pizzas. My experience is that the Aluminum dutch oven works much better for baking then the cast iron, seems to distribute the heat around better without burning bread bottoms. Just did some scones with an experiment of not taking the top off and just turned heat off last 10 mins. browned on top just fine. Just a little steam exited when lid lifted, may have to do with moistness of dough? Didn’t seem to get the steaming effect at all? I lay an oven thermometer on top of oven and can see it through hole of parka, gets to 425 degrees in 15 mins. on medium flame. How hot do these ovens get? Well, both of them get hot enough to cook anything your heart desires, let’s get that out of the way.

I have owned one of these coleman oven for years, mainly for making bread, but without much succes. Hate the way the oven doesn’t really fit on the stove. The flame is either to much to one side and will not heat the oven properly or, if you position the hole of the oven directly over the flame the oven almost falls of. I own a coleman 424, one of the best things I ever bought. That tiny thing can handle four different pots at the same time, which is more than enough for a three-course meal and then some. It’s also easier to use, it just needs a propane tank to work and it doesn’t get so hot that it will burn everything if you don’t let out the heat for two minutes. Coleman Vs. Camp Chef Oven: Final Thoughts

The oven weighs 32 lb (14.5 kg) and the inner dimensions of the oven are (L x W x H) 11 x 16 x 9 inches (28 x 40.6 x 23 cm). So you realize this is a full-size oven, and it can provide the temperature in the range 250 – 400° F (121 – 204 C). Camping Stoves: If the portable oven you choose doesn’t include stovetop burners, but you still want the option to cook multiple dishes at once,a separate camping stove might be the way to go. Remember that you will need a separate fuel source hookup for your oven and your stove if you plan to use them at the same time. If you’re looking for a lightweight option to carry on the trails, you’ll want to take into account the weight of both the oven and the fuel source. If you’re planning to use the oven frequently during a hiking trip, it will require more fuel. In this case, a solar oven — which requires no external fuel — might be a good option if you’re planning to heat up pre-cooked foods while on the trails. If your portable camp oven comes with specialised pots, make sure you use them. Most are designed to optimise cooking and cleanup for your specific unit. The Coleman oven is a better fit for people who have lots of cooking experience and need an oven that gets really hot. With a max temperature of 600ºF, this gets hotter than some household ovens! But the only way to control the temperature is to open the even and let the hot air out, so it will need your attention while there’s something inside.Take the bread out of the baking form and put it upside down on the grate to color the top for 5 minutes. It’s really easy to use the oven. As long as you have it set up correctly, it’s easy to get to the temperature you need and regulate it. An alternate option for larger groups is to choose a stove that can be daisy-chained to another system. For example, the Jetboil Genesis Basecamp System and Eureka Ignite Plus can be linked to other Jetboil or Eureka models and connected to a single propane bottle. This allows you to increase cooking space without having to lug around a heavy freestanding stove. And on outings where you don’t need the added burner(s), simply leave one of the stoves behind. Two burners are sufficient for most campers Burner Power: BTUs Obviously, the first step is to decide about the type, with or without a burner. There are big differences in size and weight that are related to this issue, and with this also comes the question of functionality.
