Description

Issue 14 has Sophie/Promethea finding Barbara in Yesod (meaning Foundation) which is the emanation connected with the moon, and which Moore peoples with the ghosts of fictional characters. In this issue we learn the greater goal of this story arch. Barbara’s deceased husband has headed up the sephirot to enlightenment, and Promethea decides to help Barbara find him. She only had the Dimensional Travel power while she was serving as Promethea. At this time, Promethea only had the Occultist skill at 06 APs, and was 1 AP less in all Mental and Mystical attributes. It’s a mess of ambition and artistry and experimentation and sometimes it works and sometimes it seems like it doesn’t, but even if it can be a challenge to actually engage with as a story, Promethea is impossible not to feel strongly about.

Issue 13 takes place on Earth or Malkuth (meaning Kingdom) the material world and lowest level of the sephirot as Sophie asks Stacia to be Earth’s temporary Promethea while she goes to find Barbara in the afterlife.

The appeal of Promethea comes from the strange marriage of JH Williams III's lush artwork to Alan Moore's baffling neo-occult philosophising. It doesn't seem that they could match; but they do.

Now, that's not to say I'm interested enough to read any more of this, but it did make me think that I might actually want to give Moore's Swamp Thing a try. The gist of this is that Promethea is a figment of imagination that comes to life through an avatar, and each avatar reinvents her own version of Promethea. Said avatars have access to, and eventually end up in, the Land of Imagination. <--not the real name The entire realm is bathed in a ultra-violet light. It is sparsely populated by glowing alien creatures. It is also inhabited by Choronzon, the demon of dispersal, which manifests as a lightning storm which rips travellers it finds to shreds, without killing them.
