Also, when the book said the mother was going away for a month and then later Maggie is unable to contact her, it was sort of a glaring red flag that her mother was going to swoop back in eventually and reveal something important.

Shame they had to age up Hilde's sister just for that reason as I know she was in middle school when Hilde was 9.The painting contains hint (a snake painted over), and in the photos Ewan sees an image of the Miss Pennyface ghost that Maggie had described. The locals aren’t thrilled that their small town has been made infamous, and human characters with starring roles in House of Horrors are waiting in the shadows. There were some scenes that were really hard for her (like when one sister yells at another) but it also started an interesting chat about what it's like to feel bullied.
