Even though the exercise is to design the perfect wallet for a friend, I didn’t want to jump directly to the solution space. So based on the interview and observations, I decided to use the jobs-to-be-done framework that would allow me to deconstruct the job that he was trying to get done. To understand his current wallet, possible problems and get some insights, I started an interview with him. I transcripted everything, but for the sake of brevity, I'll share only some sentences I considered important. After the learnings above and the iteration with my friend/husband, we were able to refine and update the desired outcomes. It made me more empathetic and understood the person or interviewee I’m designing the wallet for. I wanted to find out more about Hannah by asking about the contents of her purse, experiences, and feelings. Talking to Hannah gave me some insights on what I’m going to do/design that will benefit her.

On the outside, I have what I use most in the day to day: proximity card to access the subway and the other to access the office. I’m also putting 3 cards in one slot. I can carry it, I don't know if there are any better proposals. But it suits me very well. I think it would be the question of it not being leather, maybe it is not. The issue of the ID document I have to pull out and put in and the other of putting three cards in one place. Even with all this process, I can't guarantee that he would use the final wallet since I decided to stop at the prototype phase and it's an interactive process. One point that bothers me is, I find it very useful to have this window that shows the ID document and at the same time, it bothers me when I have to remove it. Because people generally don't like just seeing it here just like that.

She mentioned that her current wallet has no coin compartment, so when there are coins, it becomes bulky. Hannah is looking for a smaller wallet with plenty of room for cards and bills that could hold a lot and will not be bulky even with all the cash, cards, and slots filled. Hannah’s ideal wallet is something that can keep everything she needs and fits in her purse or bag.

Today, we’re going to be reviewing the classic Sketch Wallet. This beefy wallet isn’t small coming in at 4.5″x6″. This is obviously down to the fact the wallet has the ability to store a note, or sketchbook that comes in at a size of 3.5″x5.5″. The quality of the Sketch wallet is top-notch. Made from non-descript leather I think the quality is better than genuine leather (the worst type) but not as good as the likes of full-grain, putting it somewhere in the middle. Another version of the wallet is available in canvas for a cheaper price and actually gives the wallet a better and more attractive appearance. I loved the idea of them on each side. I also enjoyed having the other things with less use on the inside. I enquired further about Hannah’s past experiences and her current wallet to learn more about her. She informed me that when she was in senior high, her father bought her a new wallet since the one she used was left on the bus. She has been using it for a while now. When asked what was going through her mind when selecting a wallet, she said that she prefers an expensive one since she thinks it is sturdy and long-lasting. Now without the crutch of calling myself a student, I sometimes call myself an aspiring designer or a designer at heart. In the past two years, I have slowly discovered the language of design as the red thread to weave together my various professional and personal interests in business, art, anthropology, and more. It led me to work with Human Side of Tech last summer, TA Designing Your Tufts last Fall, and take an industrial design course last semester, among other explorations. What I loved about the class was that it nudged me towards actively practicing through the entire design cycle, to place my interest in project-based learning, from aspiring designer in theory to “practicing” designer in action. What could be improved ] Hannah was contented when I showed her the prototype. She did not wish for further improvements and was satisfied with it.Change the material for Tyvek (vegan-friendly) and the process of making the wallet would not involve animal exploitation as well; It is small and practical. I do not need to open the wallet, close and look for things. I can see my document in one side, I open up I know where the money is, and on the other side, I know the cards that I have. Change for 2 card slots instead of 3 — my husband decided he didn't need to carry his second debit/credit card;

What worked ] Everything is okay, according to Hannah. She liked the wallet’s simplicity and the new design/variation. The color and zipper of the wallet were followed. Everything she suggested last time turned out to be great for her. I loved participating in the process and having my needs listened and translated into a prototype. I confess that I came to consider using the prototype as my official wallet. ;) What I've learned I made a test on the last day removing all other cards from the wallet and letting only the transit pass card and it worked well. I think that having the cards so closed in that kind of material can causes an interference in the prox cards.
