Description

Contains wool – like some of our other gardening products such as our garden felt and shillies, this compost contains WOOL! This is something more and more of us in the UK (and globally) are suffering with due to the effects of global warming, and it is being made worse by the reduction of peat in our environment. Acts as a vital historic record of the land - peat contains vital and unique historical evidence of an area and its inhabitants.

When I got talking to them on their Chelsea stand I discovered that there was something quite different with this compost and when I was told that it was peat free and made from sheep’s wool and bracken, my interest was piqued. Here at Nutley’s, we cherry pick the very best products to help you get the most from your green space, and nothing makes it into our range unless it’s known to be useful, fit for purpose and of excellent quality. As we mentioned above, peat takes many years to form which means that the loss of peat through harvesting for horticulture and agriculture is irreversible over human timescales. Sheep’s wool has a high level of nitrogen that works as a slow release fertiliser and has good water retention. I tried this compost for the first time last year and have never had such a wonderful crop of tomatoes. On the market today no other growing media has such a naturally high concentration of nutrients, for improving plant size and quality. The gathering of flocks has become very difficult through waist high bracken stands and this very aggressive plant competes with other native vegetation to the extent that other plants fail and available grazing is reduced.

The feel of the compost felt strange to me and I was very unsure how all this was going to work – sheeps’ wool and bracken seemed to me to be a rather strange combination to put on my flower beds! The compost is fine textured and is perfectly formulated for strong and healthy seed germination, seedling growth and essential root-ball development. My gardening friends where amazed when I was still picking crops long after theirs were finished and the taste was mouth watering. Go peat-free with this Dalefoot Peat-Free Wool Compost is the compost of all composts made here in Cumbria. It can hold up to 20 times its own weight in water and according to the ONS, in the UK alone, peatland represents 27% of the UK ecosystem service accounts. Social Association approved – the compost is sustainably made from renewable, natural ingredients on Dalefoot Farm in the Lake District and is approved for organic growing by the Soil Association. When your seedlings are ready to pot or plant out, use the Peat-Free Wool Compost for Potting which will ensure your plants continue on their healthy growth trajectory. No need to feed – due to all the wonderful ingredients of the compost we mentioned above, you don’t need to add any extra feed to this compost or any water-retaining gels either. We have found that it works just as well, if not better, than compost containing peat and even has a similar soft texture. Once the use of peatlands are phased out, which is inevitable, this source of habitat will never be replenished in our lifetimes.Dalefoot Composts are a unique range of environmentally friendly peat free composts produced in the Lake District.
