You can learn a lot about a nation from their homes and here, most of them look like something out of an interior design with white walls, wooden floors, uncluttered surfaces and smart, designer touches. Every home is centred around a dining room table and having family meals together is an important part of life here. There's a great word that encapsulates the Danish approach to work - 'arbejdsglaede' - that literally means 'happiness at work'. The word exists exclusively in Nordic languages and hasn't been found anywhere else in the world. Indeed, the report drew a strong connection between inequality and unhappiness - an alarm bell of sorts for wealthy countries like the United States (#13), which over the past 50 years has become richer but no happier.

Trust is just assumed in Denmark. Danes trust each other so much they're happy to let their babies sleep outside in prams as they pop into a cafe for lunch and 79 per cent of Danes say they trust most people - a statistic I found extraordinary.Other than family and friends? Jaffa Cakes. And fish and chips. But really, that's it. The weather isn't great in Denmark - but the UK's hardly Bondi Beach.

Meet Matti. If you don't him already. This is a second book of his life (and mentioning this makes him a little embarrassed). An engaging and practical guided tour of the simple and nature-inspired ways that Finns stay happy and healthy--including the powerful concept of sisu, or everyday courage You discovered that Danes might be happier because they're such an insular, homogenous population. And yet Denmark's hardline immigration policies have been criticised for sending asylum seekers the message, 'You are not welcome here'. Aren't Danes supposed to be a liberal and welcoming bunch? You've been living in Denmark for four years now. Besides friends and family, do you miss anything in London? Do you plan to return one day?Happiness. We all desire more of it - or at least we're told we should - and yet apparently not all of us have it. The Danish government's own figures on violence against women are much lower - and going down by the year. I've also had it explained to me that there may be more violence in general in the land of Nord. Of course, work-life balance plays a big role in Denmark's happiness. Whereas Brits, Americans and Australians chase more money, Danes seek more time, and work an average of just 34 hours per week. If spending less time at work is so good for us and we know it, why do we find it so hard to do? Russell does a fantastic job in this work analyzing the cultural differences she noticed between England and Denmark, and even made several comparisons to America as well. While she does give some useful advice as to how we could all “live Danishly”, there were many aspects of her discoveries that displayed deeply ingrained systematic differences rather than personal changes. In Denmark, human rights have taken priority for a long time. To name a few policies, they experience free-health care, free education including university, and a thirty-four hour work weeks with an emphasis on “work-life” balance. Russell’s readers are really forced to think about how their own government’s systematic policies could be impacting their happiness.
