Description
Some olive oil spreads may help lower cholesterol. For example, the Flora ProActiv Olive Spread contains plant sterols, a compound clinically proven to lower cholesterol levels naturally. On the other hand, while olive oil spreads can be part of a balanced diet, they don’t match the health benefits of pure extra virgin olive oil. As previously mentioned, these spreads are a blend of various oils, diluting the proportion of health-benefiting nutrients found in pure olive oil.
Some scientists estimate that the oleocanthal in 3.4 tablespoons (50 ml) of extra virgin olive oil has a similar effect as 10% of the adult dosage of ibuprofen ( 11).
Is Bertolli olive oil spread better than butter?
Saturated fats are usually solid at room temperature. Most foods foods high in saturated fats come from animals, as well as coconut products. For example: Fermentation processes may also reduce cholesterol levels and increase beneficial bacteria in the final product ( 21). Because olives are very bitter, they’re not usually eaten fresh. Instead, they’re cured and fermented. This process reduces bitter compounds like oleuropein, which are most abundant in unripe olives. The Times carried two articles about the research, a news story and a feature which included an interview with the study author. Both were relatively accurate, but didn’t explain that the researchers had adjusted the findings to take other factors into account that could influence the results. This means the differences seen are more likely to be related to olive oil (and not, for example, that the olive oil eaters also ate more salads) although with observational studies like this, we can never be certain.
Bertolli olive oil spread is not what it looks like. It is not made mainly with olive oil, but is a blend of oils, including palm oil. While it is lower in calories and saturated fat than butter, it is not thought to be as beneficial for your heart health as extra virgin olive oil is. Palm oil is a tropical oil high in palmitic acid, a type of saturated fat that increases the risk of heart disease and high cholesterol. It has about 7 gm of saturated fat in one tablespoon. Therefore, you must limit or avoid palm oil in a heart-healthy diet. Lard Palm oil has more saturated fat than olive oil and less beneficial monounsaturated fats, but is still a better choice than high–trans fat shortenings.
Additionally, some studies show that following the Mediterranean diet, which is typically rich in olive oil, may also be associated with a reduced the risk of dementia and cognitive impairment ( 41, 42). Summary
Based on these recommendations, Bertolli spread is a better choice than butter as it is lower in saturated fat and free from trans fats. However, you should still moderate your consumption of Bertolli as it contains very little olive oil which helps reduce total cholesterol levels. It also contains palm oil which is something you should avoid.
