David Wiesner’s story of a magic along with his beautiful illustrations makes “Tuesday” a mesmerizing book for children. The darkness around it frames the cat and makes us more likely to notice it even without high contrast.

They fly around the neighborhood, interacting with a dog and even going into an elder woman’s home and watching TV! For an explanation see my review for 101 Amazing Facts about Australia You can see all the books on their own shelf. Tuesday, written and illustrated by David Wiesner, is a 1991 wordless picture book published by Clarion Books.I guess that this is one of those books that enforce the reader to really use their imagination and think. Off they go into town, where they invade an old lady's living room - it's as well that she was snoozing or she might have been rather shocked at what was happening with the remote control. These frogs are important because they are the ones traveling throughout the city, creating an adventure for the reader to witness. There is also a turtle by the pond and some birds that are in the backgrounds in different scenes in the story. It is, as the title says, Tuesday, Tuesday evening to be precise and the frogs are getting just a little restive as the light fades. I looked at this book with my class of 5yr olds and although some of them loved it, many of them found it difficult to concentrate without being read to - I loved it though, and perhaps older children would appreciate it more. Character: There’s a clear sense of character for the old lady (clothing, setting, situation), the cat (posture, expression), and many of the frogs (expression, position, posture). To give us a clear place to start our visual tour, Wiesner makes the old woman the focal point and makes her the brightest thing in it. I am absolutely amazed at how much enjoyment this book has given my daughter based solely on her interpretation of the engaging illustrations of the adventures of the frogs on their 'magic flying lily pads. The book was originally published in 1991 by Clarion Books, and then re-published in 2001 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Books for Young Readers.

Tuesday nights are for flying and frolicking toads, a gasping turtle, frightened birds, a stunned man, a sleeping matron, and a frantic dog. Dex is also wonderful – I particularly liked that as observers of his internal voice, and how he appeared through the eyes of his closest friend, we seemed to get a different impression of him from the one everyone else saw.

In this ingenious and imaginative - nearly wordless - picture book, frogs in a pond lift off on their lily pads and fly to a nearby town where they zoom through a woman's living room, encounter a dog playing in his yard, and distract a bathrobe-clad citizen from his midnight snack. Tuesday won the Caldecott Medal in 1992 and in his acceptance speech Wiesner emphasised the open-endedness of visual storytelling. During David Wiesner's formative years, the last images he saw before closing his eyes at night were the books, rockets, elephant heads, clocks, and magnifying glasses that decorated the wallpaper of his room. My favourite thing about this book is that you can make up the story and when you turn the page your story continues in your own special way.
