Marksburg Castle is one of the outstanding castles in Germany, and one of the best three castles on the Rhine (along with Rheinfels and Rheinstein) to visit. The East Lyn River rises inland on Exmoor before winding its way towards the coast at pretty Lynmouth. This is undoubtedly one of the best rivers anywhere in the West Country. William, Prince of Orange, ruled England as William III and the town then gave its name to other Dutch-influenced parts of the world including the Oranges in New Jersey and the Orange Free State in South Africa. Orange remained part of scattered Nassau holdings until it was captured by the forces of Louis XIV in the late 17th century and finally ceded to France in 1713 under the Treaty of Utrecht. St Goar is one of the most underrated Rhine river towns, with many half-timbered buildings and medieval alleys to wander.

The town suffered during the Wars of Religion, the 16th Century conflict between the Catholics and Protestants, and changed sides several times. Bullet marks on the cliff walls can still be seen. In 1567, the Protestants were finally driven out of the town, and a Catholic garrison of 60 soldiers moved into the city. The extensive castle ruins are fantastic to explore. My son came along with me for the afternoon, and loved the wall walks and vast cellar which is used as a concert venue. He’s a budding numismatist (coin and note collector) and was fascinated by the Castle Museum, particularly a one billion mark note from the galloping inflation period of the Weimar Republic in the 1920s. The city reached a peak of influence during the 4th and 5th centuries, when Roman Emperors frequently used it as their headquarters during military campaigns. In 395 it became the seat of the prefecture of the Gauls, governing the western part of the Western Empire, as was the philosopher Favorinus, as the city became renowned as a cultural and religious centre during the late Roman Empire. The River Itchen in Hampshire enchants visitors with its lovely landscape. The reflection of the green trees on the water invites you to relax and leave your everyday troubles behind.

Who would believe that the city of cigarettes would become the city of mountain-bike trails and triathlons?” asks Ralph White, manager of the James River Park System. We're hiking to the James River, mere minutes from downtown, under an overstory of sweet gum and sycamore. Inner-tubers, snorkelers, fishermen, and sunbathers use this trail to access a beautiful stretch of the fall-line river, which for more than a century held the dubious distinction of being one of the most polluted waterways in the country. “Nobody wears a noseclip anymore,” White says. “When I first got here, all the boaters wore them. Not now.” This river flows through Dartmoor in Devon (again, in the West Country). Navigable as far inland as Totnes, sections of the river upstream are popular with canoeists and kayakers. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things): Quite by accident, the river lent its name to one of the most iconic British fabrics, which was previously known as tweel. A clerk misinterpreted a handwritten note and from then on, the cloth was advertised as tweed.
