As Jake splashes out and proves money really does breed greed there is an extenuated flabby middle that does little to further the plot or fuel suspense before five weeks on from their win, the couple throw a celebratory party and fireworks really do explode. Just My Luck is a deeply moving and rewarding novel about a down-on-his-luck boy whose caring heart ultimately helps him find the strength to cope with tragedy and realize how much he truly has to offer his friends and family. The story is told from the POVs of Lexi (mom and winning lottery ticket purchaser), Emily (daughter), and Toma (an indigent Moldovan widower who Lexi meets while working at the Citizens Advice Bureau). Benny is the youngest sibling, has some heavy weights on his shoulders to begin with his dad is recovering after a brain operation that Benny blames himself for. This is my favourite book of Cammie McGovern's to date, and I cannot wait to see what she comes up with next!

Adrien's life was torn between being hounded by fans or by being oppressed by his overbearing father. Lexi who bought the ticket maintains that the other two couples had left the syndicate but they disagree and want their share. However, Lexi and Jake Greenwood contend that the other two families pulled out of the syndicate the week before the win and, therefore, they are not entitled to any of the money. There is a subplot involving a foreign national, Toma, who has lost his family in a tragedy which, initially seems tangential, but later becomes very much part of the ongoing narrative. The moral of this story, if there is one, surely must, be “Don’t play the lottery; if you win it will destroy your life.

The ensuing lawsuits, double-dealing, secret trysts, and fistfights devolve into cruelty, kidnapping, and fraud. Patrick Pearson declares the lottery “common” and says he’s tired of participating in their syndicate. Lexi and Jake Greenwood have been together for the best part of twenty-five-years and are parents to fifteen-year-old Emily and thirteen-year-old Logan. But I still found the book to be a page-turner because I was rooting for Benny, and I think you will, too!

Just My Luck by Adele Parks | Waterstones

It shows the evil side of what could happen with instant wealth and the greed with which some will go to receive their just rewards. Over dinners, they have discussed many important things over the years: kids, marriages, houses and jobs… But one Saturday night, there is an argument in the group. McGovern wrote a heartfelt story about some very big life issues that always has a slice of hope between the lines – maybe hope isn’t the right word. However, as the story progressed, and another little secret crept out - or leapt out in some cases - I did wonder if it was quite credible for quite so many issues to affect one family.

It is often said that when money is involved it brings out a person’s true colours, I have witnessed this myself with my own family. Thank you for my copy of Adele Parks' 'Just My Luck', received very late in the month, hence apologies for a late-ish review. A group of friends who have played the lottery for fifteen years have a falling out and the next week they win the lottery. For years their friends had a pool and played the same numbers, but the weekend before, their friends pulled out of the pool and low and behold, the following week Lexi wins and now their friends want a piece of the pie. The pacing of the novel is a bit uneven at times, with some flashbacks thrown in occasionally in places that didn't really make sense. It takes a close look at the impact of instant wealth on an individual, a couple, their children, their friends, workplace and wider community. And, while the tie-up between the two threads is fairly predictable, I found this the most satisfying part of the novel. Autistic siblings, parent with serious health issues, cliques beginning in school, and a little bit of "who am I?
