A mint shared with a woman he barely knows as his wife whispers in his ears, "You have twenty-four hours to move out. Dan Starkey cares for himself and makes excuses for nobody; and that makes him a protagonist you can relate to. Please Note: This book has been transferred to Between the Covers from another database and might not be described to our usual standards. Time after time he was kidnapped, beaten, shot, released, escaped or saved, and the book ended with him alive and went home to his wife.

But here he's back to what he does best: a hard-drinking, hard-talking antihero with a mouth like a sewer. The ending is inevitable and almost predictable, yet it's the only proper ending this story could possibly have. Most of those, it must be said, feature Griffiths (Muriel's hellraising mate in Muriel's Wedding whose role seems largely superfluous) and the ending asks us to take everything a lot more seriously than the film has taken itself. Black romantic comedy set around the troubled "peace process" and its effect on a cynical Belfast hack. Publishers Weekly took a similar stance, stating "the plot machinations are formulaic", yet tempering this by stating that "what makes this tale stand out, however, is the wit and charm of its protagonist", and that "the intricate Irish politics are gracefully rendered, and Bateman's wry take on the gritty Belfast landscape adds an appealingly light touch", concluding again that "the author apparently has another Dan Starkey novel in the works; that's very good news indeed".Jason Isaacs, who, like Thewlis, has recently familiarized himself with American audiences through the Harry Potter movies, in bone-chillingly excellent in the lead villain role.

A bold attempt at a comedy-thriller set in the near future in Belfast, this first feature from David Caffrey shows plenty of promise and chutzpah, but veers wildly in tone from sweet romantic comedy to bloody thriller and back again. Written when there was no end in sight to The Troubles in Northern Ireland, this is an offbeat and generally engaging mystery thriller. In a weird moment of black comedy, he accidentally kills the victim’s mother when he collides violently with her on the stairs as he makes a getaway. While Starkey is a bit of an everyman who inexplicably draws the eye of every attractive woman he crosses, I found myself more intrigued by the characters he meets along the way. He has a strong moral core, but is frequently faced with impossible choices, and the insanity of it all is sometimes too much to bear. But when his past catches up to his present, he's forced to take his unsuspecting family on the road trip of a lifetime.
