In Edwardian Britain, young women would look for visions of their future husbands in candlelit mirrors.

The mystery of Bloody Mary will never be solved, especially since the origins of the urban legend are so murky. The Wolf Among Us, a 2013 video game based on the Fables comic book series, introduces the Bloody Mary legend as a Fable and one of the key antagonists in the game, voiced by Kathryn Cressida. Medical experts now suggest she may have suffered from pseudocyesis: a condition that essentially ghosts a pregnancy by producing all the symptoms.

I don’t entirely understand how superstitions such as these help us make sense of the world or manage threats as urban legends do, but they validate people’s feelings anyway. But if the performer is sinful, then the vengeful mother will appear and strangle them with a noose made of rose thorns. Here Mary is conjured just by speaking her name, and starts to target the descendants of the five people responsible for her death; she was killed as part of a prank gone wrong at prom 1969, over three decades previously.

But what Mary I is most infamous is for being an ardent Catholic whose burning devotion to her faith earned her the nickname “Bloody Mary”. I grew up with different urban legends so Bloody Mary was something that I didn’t learn until high school when my friends were trying to look up popular urban legends. In 2008, for their annual " Halloween Horror Nights" event, Universal Studios Florida developed a new variation of the legend.

They took me into a bathroom and started chanting “bloody marry” I cried and would not open my eyes until they turned the lights back on so I cannot say I have had experience with seeing a face in the mirror. After school, he and I would announce that we would summon the ghost in the mirror, and he’d slip out the window. She was married to Ferenc Nádasdy, a Hungarian war hero who fought with distinction against the Ottomans and gifted her his family estate of Čachtice Castle for their wedding. I think is kind of how people keep beliefs alive as time progress so that the urban legend can make sense it that time period. There are plenty of great gins for Bloody Marys – use something not too heavy on the juniper and that have some complimentary botanicals in it.

Other ingredients that taste sensational in Bloody Mary’s are – horseradish sauce, paprika, celery salt, balsamic vinegar, beef bouillon, cayenne pepper, Cajun seasoning, mustard, Oxford Sauce, garlic powder, onion powder…the list is infinite. For upon Mary’s death, and the accession of her successor, Elizabeth I, England was steered back towards Protestantism.A season two episode of Charmed ("Chick Flick") involves a demon who makes killers from different horror movies come to life. I never played the game because I was young and actually thought it was really and she would really appear! If a healthy-looking apparition stared back at them, they could expect a swift recovery; if the apparition appeared ghoulish it meant their days were numbered.
