to have distinctly hostile intentions – is surely as pure comic strip style as the series had ever been to that point and the underrated six-parter Colony in Space sees the Doctor and Jo travel to the unwelcoming planet Uxarius where waits another Universe-dominating plot by the Master. The script is a little thin on the ground and, as I mentioned earlier, is essentially a remake of Spearhead from Space with added bells and whistles. I know these had the colour luminance from the NTSC copies transferred to the PAL film copies like The Colony in Space, but some sequences like in the Axon ship and the laboratory look quite fuzzy.

The way they are knocking these out might not have that long 2 year wait as it seems to have been the filmed documentaries and location films that were being held back due to the pandemic and also actor availability. Nicholas Courtney and John Levene continue their roles of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart and Sergeant Benton, while Richard Franklin makes his first appearance as Captain Mike Yates. A lot of the same cues are there: plastics factory, faceless mannequins, only this time we’ve got the Master taking charge. For those that think the Master from recent New Who are the best they clearly need to see the Original Roger Del Gado who created this role and loved every minute he was onscreen battling with the 3rd Doctor Jon Pertwee. I think it’ll keep bothering me for the duration of the run because of how visible it is on your shelf that it’s been done incorrectly. Season 8 is a collection of big, brash, colourful romps, the Season 7 template softened by the introduction of warmer and more intriguing regular characters (although there’s an argument to suggest that The Master, appearing in every serial, becomes a little overused).

As always, there’s another of Matthew Sweet’s fantastic in-depth conversations, this time with the eternally vivacious Katy Manning; and Toby Hadoke follows up his Weekend with Waterhouse with the equally alliterative Living with Levene. I have “clean” artwork on the other sets but the spine imagine for S8, S12 (2nd EDT) and S23 all contain the villains and as you say S8 is marginally higher and just seems bigger than the others. Even best case scenario this range is going to be going on until well past the middle of the decade, it would be very short sighted to drop a Troughton release now knowing the animation team are focusing on that era.Season 8 of Doctor Who: The Collection is the next Blu-ray title to be re-issued in standard packaging. The restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic are occasionally noticeable, plastic screens during the Behind the Sofa filming for instance, but in that context it is an incredible achievement to have delivered these features at all.

Another new but hopefully regular feature is The Direct Route which sees Doctor Who directors, in this case Michael Briant, Graeme Harper and Tim Combe, on a road trip around the filming locations from Season 8. Interviews: Katy Manning (actor), Making of Documentary, 'The Daemons - Omnibus' movie edit; 'The Vampire From Space' extended edit; PDF written archive: scripts and rare archival material. Plastic Fantastic - Examining the development and social impact of plastic products, and a look at how plastic infiltrated science fiction stories. In years gone by, The Mind of Evil was one of the more problematic serials in the Pertwee era, existing only as a black and white film print and a dodgy telerecording with a piss-poor colour signal. The 1970's have never looked so good and we welcome them back with (an actual non covid related) big hug.The original VHS contained colour footage highlights and a restoration credit sequence, neither of which have been reissued digitally. Simpson even gives the Master his own theme, which will follow the character throughout all the Pertwee-era stories that he wrote the music for. Some copies of the booklet were missing pages, and duplicated others in their place, these were replaced by BBC Studios on request. It’s one of Jon Pertwee‘s absolute best stories, one which gives all six regulars a fair crack of the whip and showcases some of their best performances.

As beloved as Season 7 of Doctor Who is, there’s no doubting it’s a bit of a mish-mash; unlike the modern series, where a showrunner might be allowed a generous amount of time to work out how they want to present the new Doctor, Barry Letts and Terrance Dicks had less than 6 months to pull together a new Doctor, new companion, new format and the switch to colour broadcasting that was having an impact on every production within the BBC. For the week that ended on April 1st, Lionsgate Home Entertainment's Plane topped the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts in its debut. Assuming no black and white seasons for a while, and that Pertwee and McCoy aren’t getting a double release this year, that narrows us right down. Viewers also have the option of watching a 90 minute omnibus edition which gives the whole story a rapid pace.
