So, yeah, I both admired the artwork--found it brilliant, a pen and ink masterwork--and even admired aspects of the multi-layered, storytelling about a descent into madness, but I also found it very, very hard to read this story and look at.

DeFalco "1980s" in Gilbert (2008), p. 219: "Machine Man was a living robot who was relaunched in 1984 by Tom DeFalco, Herb Trimpe, and Barry Windsor-Smith."

The first volume provides examples of the following tropes:

Barry Windsor-Smith was born Barry Smith on 25 May 1949 in Forest Gate, East End of London. [1] [2] He displayed artistic abilities at an early age and practiced drawing by copying Wally Wood artwork in Mad magazine and the works of Leonardo da Vinci, with little regard for what was or wasn't considered fine art. [3] His parents supported him in following an arts education and he attended East Ham Technical College for three years, earning degrees in Industrial Design and Illustration. Sanmıyorum da. a b c d e f Cooke, Jon B. (May 1998). The special properties and history of Adamantium are not gone into. In this story, it just seems to be a very strong alloy. Employing a battered and disconsolate childhood as the springboard for the modern-day Bruce Banner’s anti-social and violent attitudes, the story explores the damage caused by mismatched parenthood and effects of the Second World War on the heart and mind of the veteran Tom Banner. Bruce Banner, an 11 year old in 1950, is represented as the full grown, seven foot Hulk throughout this fantasy. The story is called Thanksgiving and details the tensions the Banner household suffers when it becomes apparent that the family dinner, planned with eight relatives in mind, falls apart as one by one, brothers, sisters and in-laws cancel the visit with feeble excuses. There are shades of Frankenstein here, but also of Windsor-Smith’s celebrated 1991 Wolverine origin story Weapon X (evil scientists torturing a drifter into wretched superhumanity), and even a hint of The Shining. One of the things that’s interesting about Windsor-Smith as a writer and illustrator is that, as much as he bridles at the commercial comic book industry, he never seems to look down on the fantastical genre elements that are its bread and butter. It was his excitement at Kirby’s drawing – and Kirby, let’s not forget, was a genius of the bombastic and esoteric – that took this art-school kid across the Atlantic. Special mention goes to him waking up during the Adamantium bonding process (i.e. having his skeleton coated in molten metal). Other American Awards". Comic Book Awards Almanac.
