In 2021, the project was awarded an AHRC Follow-on Funding for a collaboration with National Museums NI to set up an exhibition at the Ulster American Folk Park which explores the Bad Bridget themes. In November 2017 the people of Zimbabwe took to the streets in an unprecedented alliance with the military.

Maggie Smith's story was recounted by the brilliant Siobhan McSweeney in our Bad Bridget podcast (2020). Although we refer to 'Bad Bridget' as a collective, these girls and women often had little in common besides their island of origin. In their book, Bad Bridget: Crime, Mayhem and the Lives of Irish Emigrant Women (Sandycove), they reveal the social forces that bred this mayhem and dysfunction, through stories that are brilliantly strange, sometimes funny, and often moving. With his extraordinary charm and sense of wonder, bringing together science, philosophy and art, Carlo Rovelli unravels this mystery. Hear from Dr Elaine Farrell (Queen's University) and Dr Leanne McCormick (Ulster University) who came up with the concept for the exhibition. Dr Elaine Farrell is a Reader in Irish Social History at Queen’s University Belfast, specialising in nineteenth and early twentieth-century Ireland.

this is a valuable work of social history that offers a vibrant reconstruction of a familiar terrain – Irish immigration to North America – from a fresh and enlightening perspective, that of Irish female criminals.Telling the untold stories of generations of Irish women who saw their American Dream become a nightmare. Dr Leanne McCormick is a Senior Lecturer in Modern Irish Social History and the Director of the Centre for the History of Medicine in Ireland (CHOMI) at Ulster University. Leanne McCormick (Author) Leanne McCormick is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Arts and Humanities at Ulster University and co-creator with Elaine Farrell of the Bad Bridget project. A special blog for International Women's Day by Dr Elaine Farrell, School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics.

I have posted images of New Geneva to my new WhatsApp and Telegram channels WhatsApp Irish History ChannelTelegram Irish History Channel Key sources Whatmore, R. Among the wave of emigrants from Ireland to North America were many, many young women who travelled on their own, hoping for a better life. I was expecting some bias, as it was written by Irish authors, making the women out to be 'victims' of emigration, but it wasn't.This sleepy corner of Georgia gained notoriety in the later stages of the US Civil War when the Confederacy opened a prison camp there. I will warn you this book delves into heavy topics such as infanticide, murder, sexual assault, thievery and alcoholism but these stories shed light on the lives of the women who up to now had rarely had their stories told before hand. By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. In this promotional episode, Dr Elaine Farrell and Dr Leanne McCormick are joined by Derry Girls’ actress, Siobhán McSweeney, to guide you through the laughs, the tears, the prison sentences and the resourcefulness of Irish women in the US over the next five episodes of this new podcast.
