His 2004 novel 'Winston’s War' was shortlisted for the Channel 4 Political Book of the Year Award. He was the winner of the Benjamin Franklin Award for best historical novel in 2008 and in 2001 was shortlisted for the C4 Political Novel of the Year. He has also been a judge of the Whitbread Book of the Year Award and lectures at dozens of literary and fundraising events each year. House of Cards (U.S. TV series), a 2013 series based on the BBC series and the novel, set in Washington, D.C., commissioned and released by Netflix. He was considered a masterful political operator and was called "Westminster’s baby-faced hit man", by The Guardian in 1987. In the John Major government, he served as Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party from 1994 to 1995, after which he retired from politics. The Urquhart trilogy has been adapted in the United States as House of Cards. The show stars Kevin Spacey as Francis "Frank" Underwood, the Majority Whip of the Democratic caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives, who schemes and murders his way to becoming President of the United States. It is produced by David Fincher and Spacey's Trigger Street Productions, with the initial episodes directed by Fincher. This story does have wonderful characters. I liked Maggie though I wish she had been stronger against her mother and I liked Jonnie except I felt he was a little too busy with his Casino and while he pled that he loves Maggie I didn’t really see that, it seemed like she came in second to Queen Diva and his casino.

Los políticos se parecen mucho a los escritores avejentados y las mujeres ancianas. La fase más peligrosa en sus vidastienen lugar cuando ya no se contentan con el respeto de los amigos y exigen la adulación de un público" Although Dobbs denies his first and most successful novel is a “book of revenge”, the story begins and ends with a toppled prime minister, and he does reveal that the book was inspired by his experience of politics. “Most of the stuff I put into House of Cards was material from events I’d either seen, or participated in, or done, or watched other people do.” Michael Dobbs' writing career began in 1989 with the publication of House of Cards, the first in what would become a trilogy of political thrillers with Francis Urquhart as the central character; House of Cards was followed by To Play the King in 1992 and The Final Cut in 1994. In 1990 House of Cards was turned into a television mini-series which received 14 BAFTA nominations and two BAFTA wins and was voted the 84th Best British Show in History. [14] Netflix produced a US version based upon Dobbs's first novel and its BBC adaptation. He was an executive producer of the American series. [15]An avid reader since the age of four, Ainsley’s love of books knew no genre. After reading, came her love of writing, fully immersing herself in the colorful, impassioned world of contemporary romance.

Yes Minister (and its sequel Yes, Prime Minister), a satirical sitcom about a generic British government Andrew Davies adapted the story from the 1989 novel of the same name by Michael Dobbs, a former chief of staff at Conservative Party headquarters. Neville Teller also dramatised Dobbs's novel for the BBC World Service in 1996, and it had two television sequels ( To Play the King and The Final Cut). The opening and closing theme music for this TV series is entitled "Francis Urquhart's March", by Jim Parker. Jonathan is thirty-three, the same age as Maggie's older brother. Apart from running the casino he built, Jonathan has some other talents as well which he is seeking to capitalize now. But he still wants his love with him, though Maggie doesn't seem interested in making any efforts at first. While it did seem a bit long-winded at times, I still enjoyed the descriptions and the problems that one encounters on a day-to-day working of a resort and casino. Following the resignation of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, the ruling Conservative Party is about to elect a new leader. In the subsequent leadership election, the moderate but indecisive Henry "Hal" Collingridge emerges victorious. Francis Urquhart, an MP and the Government Chief Whip in the House of Commons, is secretly contemptuous of the well-meaning but weak Collingridge, but expects a promotion to a senior position in the Cabinet. After the general election, which the party wins by a reduced majority, Urquhart submits a memorandum to Collingridge advocating a cabinet reshuffle that would include a prominent ministerial position for Urquhart himself. However, Collingridge—citing Harold Macmillan's political demise after the 1962 Night of the Long Knives—effects no changes at all. Urquhart resolves to oust Collingridge.

Dobbs’ preoccupation with politicians’ personal turmoil has made his creation so appealing to a general audience. It’s about people, not politics – an angle heightened by Urquhart and then Underwood’s shattering of the fourth wall to give asides to the audience throughout the action. Kay, John (4 February 2014). "Prince Charles visits Somerset levels". BBC News . Retrieved 28 August 2023. In the final confrontation scene Urquhart throws himself from the roof terrace and Mattie survives. Ainsley St Claire is a Romantic Suspense Contemporary Romance Author and Adventurer on a lifelong mission to craft sultry storylines and steamy love scenes that captivate her readers.Insightful, cynical, and dark as night, House of Cards makes for a good thriller, with well-rounded characters, and kept me on edge right to its treacherous finale. I was completely immersed in this story. The romance is passionate and so poignant, and the complexity of Maggie’s situation with the inheritance of her father’s company was so carefully layered that I had to keep reading to see what happened.
