Description

The story itself is great. It's modern New Zealand, its ties to Maori legend, and a murder mystery which is just the beginning of a recipe for a great storyline. Hints are dropped and twists revealed along the way which added depth to the storyline. In the wild and rugged mountains of Aotearoa New Zealand, the mutilated body of a TV fishing celebrity has been discovered, and Detective Sargent Rachael Blunt is assigned the case. While the idea for the story was fantastic, the delivery fell flat. For the most part, the story was plot driven. To me, it came across as though the author had a detailed outline of how the story should reveal itself and when transitioning the outline to an actual story, lost all the details and suspense through the characters which were over-exaggerated stereotypes. This is especially true for Jenny, the weathergirl. All the main characters were sarcastic at every opportunity and seemed to carry a chip on their shoulder. It was definitely the dialog and inner-thoughts of the characters which I found most annoying.

The Eel That Slept is a book which crosses the genres of crime thriller and adventure mystery. With contemporary themes of racism and misogyny, along with a narrative thread based on the mythology of the South Pacific, it’s a must-read book for fans of crime, adventure, and magical realism (It’s Da Vinci code meets Rizzoli and Isles) This all happens in a modern world of cars and mobile phone, but all the while, something else is watching them, an ancient creature from Maori legend, and its reawakening heralds the start of much darker days still to come. Meanwhile, Jenny Sunley, a TV weathergirl, is sent to cover the story of a once-in-a-lifetime weather event, an unusual ‘blood rain’ that has travelled all the way from Australia’s red centre.
