It is a 2-channel DAC chip and uses the same Velvet Sound Technology used in the flagship chipsets like AK4497 and AK4499. I have tested quite a lot of devices that are using this particular chipset, I’ve experienced it in the Topping E30 [SV1] , SMSL Sanskrit 10th MKII, xDuoo XD-05 Plus, FiiO K5 PRO, FiiO Q5S, FiiO M11 and the best of them all was the mighty Flux Labs Acoustics FCN-10 with the nicest AK4493 implementation I’ve heard by a long shot. The chipset is of course only a very small portion of a much bigger story as the implementation around it is considerably more important than the silicon itself. They used the most suited S/PDIF digital receiver that you’ll spot in much nicer DACs, it’s the AK4118 that offers a low jitter through coaxial and optical. Lastly I believe just getting A30 is also an option, but I cannot find A30 operate as DAC with FIXED RCA output to the Edifiers, so that's a challenge? With a naming scheme that cannot be easier to understand in terms of hierarchy, the D40 is aptly called having clear advantages over its cheaper brothers such as the previously reviewed D30 yet retains the excellence achieved by their current top-of-the-line DAC and completing the series starting from 10 going up to 50. Mid range is finely articulated, present and harmonious, with softened edges, lifelike texture and plenty of air around the performers. As I’ve said before, it slowly pressed the brakes with all my headphones, it is not exactly visceral and impactful sounding. It is slower paced and even a bit muddier in here.
