This one is also quite bourbon-like, but a notch richer and more savory. It’s probably my favorite so far, although there’s nothing revelatory or hugely complex here. Tasting Notes: West Cork 10 Year Single Malt I greatly disliked the original Connemara Peated Whiskey the first time I tried it. On the second occasion, about two years later, I still disliked it… greatly.

The best Irish whiskey for: Both first time sippers and experienced palates will appreciate Redbreast 12 On the wild north coast of Ireland, the Bushmills Distillery has stood proud for over 400 years and it is one of the oldest of the many whiskey distilleries in Ireland. Named after historic Knappogue Castle ( built in 1467) in County Clare, Knappogue Castle Irish Whiskey is a brand of premium single malt Irish whiskey.First up is one of West Cork’s two new U.S. releases, their barrel proof Irish whiskey. It’s an unspecified blend of malt and grain whiskeys, aged in bourbon barrels and bottled at a fiery barrel-strength 124 proof, and sold as a limited release. There was a time when this single pot still Irish whiskey was only available from Dublin grocer Mitchell’s. However, I’ve found myself decidedly avoiding it in recent pub-visits, hence the switch (note: Yellowspot is still a great drop, but no longer one of my favourites).

The whiskey has precious little in common with the 10 year old single malt we reviewed in 2015, which came across as a fruit bomb overloaded with apple notes. The body has notes of orchard fruits, both fresh and cooked with a little vanilla cream and the finish is medium-length with spice and honey. However, the one that I find myself returning to is their single pot still, which is matured in bourbon barrels (see Irish whiskey vs Bourbon) before being further matured in Spanish sherry casks. I’ve no doubt that we’ve unintentionally left out some top Irish whiskey brands from the guide above. One of the unique things about this lesser-spotted drop is that each bottle is individually numbered and signed by the Master Distiller, and sold in an accompanying wooden display case.No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service.

We’ve reviewed quite a few Irish whiskey bottlings from West Cork Distillers, but this 8 year old single malt may be its best release yet. A good Irish whiskey for: Those looking for a tasty whiskey at a mid-range price point (its impressive bottle makes it a good gift) Aftertaste is short and peppery at first, but then you discover it is still lingering after long time. West Cork seems to have this characteristic sulphury aftertaste of something like, excuse my comparison, motor oil (?) which I really, really love. Morish is a good word? You don't want to stop sipping it, that's for sure. That has led some to invest at the ground floor - while the liquid is still in a cask - in the hope of making a return when it is eventually mature.Established in 1757, Kilbeggan claims to be Ireland’s oldest licensed distillery and, after battling through a painful closure in 1953, it was revived by locals 30 years later who’ve kept it going ever since. The Boyne Valley’s clear water and lush soil provide a fine base for Slane’s triple casked whiskey. Its cask-selling programme is now going into its third year - and James says it has attracted a variety of buyers, from whiskey hobbyists to those hoping to eventually make a profit on their investment. Tullamore D.E.W is the smoothest Irish whiskey, in my opinion, and it’s always very well priced, which will suit those looking for a good Irish whiskey on a budget.
